Benning should of traded Sutter to one of the California teams last season when he had the chance. Each game that passes, this supposed Benning "foundational player" trade value drops big time.

Gaudette and MacEwen could easily fill in for what Sutter brings to this team.

This is the problem when the teams underlying goal is to compete for the playoffs. When the players play well/hit peak value, we don't do the right thing and trade them knowing they will regress back to the mean. When they aren't playing well we bench them, devalue them, then end up doing favours for other teams to get rid of them.

This year seems like a lazy time to use the injury excuse when the Canucks arent even close to the teams with the most man games lost.

Last year 4 of the 5 top teams in man games lost made the playoffs—good teams have depth to overcome those injuries.

Essentially the injury excuse, when given by Benning, is a total self-own and self admission that he's not up to the job.

"we're not exactly sure what it is" eloquently sums up this administration when it comes to everything.

First Baertschi and now Sutter. How many abdominal-groin injuries has this guy had since joining the Canucks? Seems to me we might have a chronic condition here. Might explain why he's been so bad coming back from his latest injury.

Canucks waited too long to trade Sutter. As soon as the ink was dry on the Beagle contract for three years, they should have been shopping Sutter. Now nothing will happen until summer.

The really damning thing is that elevating Gaudette and keeping MacEwen around might actually make the Canucks a better team.

Isn’t the “standard” that GMs generally get only one head coach to fire before they get shown the EI office? Unless of course they have a Cup win with said employer (which buys you more time)?

Bob Mackenzie on team1040 says no teams were calling on Sutter prior to his injury

Yep...both of Jimbo's 'foundational players' Sutter and Gudbranson going out with whimper instead of a bang. Probably can't trade 'em, and buy-outs might be the only option. The cost in assets to acquire them in the first place makes you feel more than a little queasy.

    But time to move on.

hmmmm nobody needs an offensive black hole center that dumps the puck in on odd man rushes?

I'm shocked teams aren't lining up for his services.

Wait until Benning becomes a GM for another NHL team. There will be at least one buyer for him (hopefully Eriksson as well). Though to be fair, ignoring the trade itself, Sutter is the probably the best player he's acquired via trade.

Sutter performed well in his role last season. A GM with a plan would have looked to move him then. Predictably father time has come for Brandon and his game is falling apart.

Jim doesn't have a plan beyond sitting there with his thumb up his ass. He picks players at the draft and signs a couple guys in free agency. Otherwise he's basically asleep at the switch.

Wonder if he aggrevated his sports hernia from a couple years back and needs another surgery. Would end his season.

It's pretty incredible how many times they try to downplay injuries and it backfires horribly.

He's a negative asset with 2 more years at $4.375MM (L-NTC in those years) and when he's not missing dozens of games with injuries he's dragging two wingers down into the mud. There was no reason to acquire him in the first place—lock Brad Richardson up for 2-3 years and we get better performance for better cost.

Can we take the Sutter out of his name? Brandon is the most unSutterlike of all the Sutters

Depending on your point of view, the real depressing thing is that Gaudette actually improves the Canucks third-line center position, and he's a raw rookie.

Kinda sorry for Sutter though, who seems to be a stand-up guy. It was obvious that Carolina and Pittsburgh pretty quickly deduced there really wasn't any offense there even before his body was letting him down with the Canucks

Not really his fault that Jimbo signed him to that ridiculous $4m a season contract....take the money and run.

Sutter just came off of a serious shoulder injury, and now has a groin issue (seems to be the thing when guys come back from being a long time on the shelf..Boeser?)..Before his shoulder injury in October, he was very effective (even though his point totals don't indicate that).

Again,I think that you are selling Sutter short..When healthy, he is a reliable defensive 3rd line centre....Gaudette is not there yet, still fairly weak on the draw, and was playing sheltered minutes under coach Green..The beneficiary of having a healthy Sutter and Beagle is Pettersson and Horvat, who can then concentrate on the offence.

Seems to me like Gaudette is the shiny new toy, and impatient fans are ready to run Sutter out of town.

Sutter has been injured or crap for about 3.5 of his 4 seasons here. I think it’s pretty fair for fans to not be enamoured with him.
