brady skjei at age 24 with 169 games under his belt just got 5.25 million for his next 6 seasons

brandon carlo will turn 22 before his next contract and should have around 230-240 games under his belt.

skjei averages 4.5 goals a year... a bit better for assists around 27 or so... so hes barely a 30 point guy at this point.

carlo without any pp time has just the 6 goals all in his rookie year. only 16 assists over 2 seasons...

so the easy objection is carlo doesn't have the offense skjei does.... but what will carlo produce this year? could he put up 25 points?

skjei just got 5.24 mill for 6 years. I think if im carlos agent I don't settle for a penny less than 4 mill for a 4 year deal

if boston wants more term the ask goes up significantly

I feel like we should bump this to avoid Carlo talk in the Krug thread.

I believe it was Ray Bourque who said it takes 300 games before you know what you have in a defenseman. Carlo is 21 and has shown much early in his career. He still has room to grow but I believe when it is all said and done Carlo is going to be an above average solid top 4 lock defenseman.

I don’t see it. 4 mil? They would be crazy to give him that much.

You know, even before he really started playing professionally, my projectional hope for this guy was that he would become the new Dennis Seidenberg for this team.

Seids was NOT a scorer or offensive player. He had some 20+ points seasons, but he was never a guy who, when on the ice, you figured he was gonna score. I figure Carlo's probably going to have a similar trajectory.

And I would rather that he becomes a playoff warrior that is excellent at shutting down opposing forwards than a powerplay specialist. Scoring for defense is very important, but not every kid on the corps is gonna be successful for that. I'd rather they let him work with Zdeno and continue to build on his defensive acumen, and push him to get physically involved more. Big, mobile and nasty defensemen who are solid in their own zone is a boon for any team.

I never heard that quote from Ray. I find it interesting that he knows how many games it takes to find out if a defenseman is going to be good but he doesn't know how many drinks it takes to be three times the legal limit.

I'd like to see Carlo take Cams advice and quit playing soft. I like that Cam called him out on his lack of physical play. You would think that a guy with his size would be willing to use it to his advantage without having to be embarrassed by the president.

We have quite a few good young players, keyword being young. Expecting them to be something they're not at an early age while they may have the potential to become that later is just showing impatience. Most men can somewhat easily pack on muscle between the ages of 18 and 25. Just because somebody is tall does not mean they are physically developed to take on a more physical game. I'm sure over the course of 10 years that physical game will come as they mature with muscular development. The other side is the confidence that comes with being in the league for a few years and actually believing that you belong there and playing the part. Carlo is still very young. personally I'm happy with the way he has progressed and hopefully he continues to progress to the point where he uses his body and size to his advantage more often. I know people here live in a push-button world and expect instantaneous results from these young players, but they need time to develop ... and to acquire experience and confidence.

This is the year Carlo makes a noticeable step up in his game. As long as he is able to stay healthy, any non-believers in Carlo will become believers. It is going to be a big year for him.

I was on the “why not trade Carlo+ for Landy/Duchene” train. I think this is the season I really feel dumb for saying that.

i hope he doesnt go into this season thinking he has to be this bone crushing defender.. he is solid.. i think he underestimates his own strength.. my hope that he gets tougher to play against while maintaining all the good habits that kept him on this team throughout the last couple of years.. oh, and a small uptick in some points would never be a bad thing

I hope he does think he has to be a bone crusher. We have way too few of those on this roster and it's not like the rest of his game is that great. To me, this is the best news of the whole off-season. I may have to buy a Carlo jersey if he holds true with this. :D

I agree. If he plays his game while showing some of the physical play he showed some last year he is a no doubt top 4 D, which I believe he is now anyways. He could be the breakout player this season for them.

Agreed. This is what we need out of him... If he can develop into a steady d-man, a bit of a mean streak and learn to hit effectively... I'm all for it.

I'm pretty hard on the guy at times, but last year on occasion he started to act like he cared. So many times you'd see a scrum in front of the Bruins net, and Carlo would be picking his ass not getting involved, however towards the end of the year he started to show a more aggressive side, especially considering his offensive game is very lackluster.

If he can use his size (6'5', 208 lbs) and be a more aggressive D-man, sign me up!

To me, it was like a switch was flipped in him vs the Penguins on March 1. That game was brutal. That was the night Chara fought Oleksiak at the end of a monster PK shift. At some point that night, Crosby got away with punching Carlo right in the face. It seemed like from that night forward he started playing angry.

I always viewed his ceiling at a Chris Tanev type. Let’s hope the muscle doesn’t impact his skating but do agree w all, he was more effective later in the year while being more physical.

I mean if I had his height and size I would bully people. Crosby especially. IDK how big Crosby is but if I was 6'5 and that nerd punched me I would put the fear of god into him

Never been a fan of these lines...So because he's not in there mucking it up, that correlates to him not caring? It was great to see him play with some physicality and aggression, but I don't see how that means he started to care.
