Some dimensions simply cannot be quantified easily, but in addition to being dominant offensively, he makes every single player on the ice with him better.

Is there any linemate of mcdavid that plays worst away from him?

Maroon? Kassian?

Hall got traded because he didnt mess with mcdavid
Hopkins gets no boost
Neal did ok on pp... for a few games

Is draisatl noticeably differnt?

Guys like gretzky and lemieux made everyone better

Evidence says marchand makes everyone better

Its not easy to find alot of other guys that just elevate everyone

I mean the narrative on crosby is no one plays well with him. People are always saying krejci has no wingers.

In edmonton they keep saying mcdavid needs better linemates

In my opinion Marchand is a bit frustrated by the abuse he has been taking without drawing calls
This happens every game and almost every shift. The NHL lets far too much stuff go if Brad is on the receiving end.

At least Marchy doesn't react every time anymore. He does give the guys in stripes an ear full sometimes...rightfully so.

McDavid's been top 3 in the league for assists for 3 straight years and is on track to do it again for a 4th, but he doesn't make his linemates better and more effective? :biglaugh:

Who's benefiting from all these quality passes then and finishing them off with goals? A ghost?

assists is offense right? I think I would admit hes the top scoring forward in the nhl the past 3 years...

its 1 dimension of hockey that is very important... and hes spectacular at it... super exciting... I wont blame you for being enthralled by his highlights. im also enthralled by his highlights

hes not very physical
honestly rather average defensively
hes not a rhah rhah speaker in the dressing room
theres always a desperate scramble to find linemates for him because only drasailt plays well on his wing

he does 1 single dimension so well... it scares the opposition and throws them off their game... hes in their heads and they dont play their normal hockey against him

so... he has an intimidation factor... based on his 1 part of his game...

marchand just does tons of things that McDavid doesnt... and as far as the offense goes theres not a huge differnce

You have a very broad definition of a 'dimension' but I'm starting to see what you're getting at.

On defense I think McDavid is solid enough. He's no Bergeron but he's still a legitimate two-way center. And he hasn't developed long-term chemistry with any particular wingers yet, but he still helps whoever he is with score a lot which is the primary goal.

On leadership and presence, well he is the captain. I'm not privy to the Oilers' locker room but did they really give the 'C' to a guy who has no ability to inspire, support and talk to his teammates? You don't have to be loud to be a good captain.

What are these 'tons of things' that Marchy does that McDavid doesn't?

He is slowly starting to look like early season Brad again...He had a pretty average stretch of hockey by his standards for about 2 months

First 25 games of the season
18 Goals
25 Assists
43 Points
+20

Last 35 games
5 Goals
26 Assists
31 Points
+3

Really hope he gets his goal scoring touch back and going before the playoffs

4 straight 80 point seasons for Bradley... only the 5th Bruin to do that. #63 is going to the rafters, for sure.

His mid-career jump is pretty unbelievable.

First (full) five seasons of his career, he averaged 52 points per 82 games (basically 26G/26A). In his next 5 seasons, his 82-game point pace is 91 (38G/53A). How many players break out in their 6th/7th year in the league?

Part of the reason is Pastrnak and his powerplay time has increased, but I think a major factor is his shooting, or rather the number of shots he takes. First five seasons he averaged 2 shots on goal per game. In the next five seasons, it's increased to close to 3 per game. He's always had a good shot, he just needed to use it more, and his willingness to shoot has added aggressiveness to his overall offensive game.

It helps that he's cut back on a lot of the stupid stuff the last couple years too. I mean, it's still there, but not like it used to be. I think it took him a while to figure out that he could succeed without it.

Has to do with utilization for sure... the coaching change was huge for him and Bergeron. Claude used them way more defensively, and while Butchy still has no issue putting them against top lines, they are used way more offensively. Also having Bergeron and Chara as the guys to look up to, tireless workers, played a factor as did a "generational" player like Pasta.

I just finished compiling clips for a 2019/20 Marchy 1-on-1 deking, rushes and puck protection video. 122 clips total, but it'll be edited down to more of a best of I'm assuming. That being said, if anyone has access to this year's slate of games and want to see Marchy in the zone, watch the December 21 Nashville game. There were a lot of games that I couldn't pull any clips from but in this game alone I found 10 unique dekes/sequences. He finished the game with nothing for points, but I think it may have been his best game of the year.

Re-watching the highlights of that Columbus series. Man, that was a close one. Bobrovski really let the Jackets down at the end of it.

This play really stands out for me as the turning point. Columbus just got a huge goal after a long review and had a great chance. Watch the defensive play Marchand makes here:

The moment Pasta turns over the puck he starts skating as hard as he can and he breaks up what would have been a glorious rebound scoring chance.

Just looking ahead at awards stuff and I think we're going to see a pretty ridiculous situation for the Second All-Star Team LW. Panarin is guaranteed to be First Team All-Star at LW, and rightfully so (Pasta is guaranteed First Team RW by the way), but just based on how voting goes for these, I think there's going to be two candidates for the Second Team spot (with all due respect to Huberdeau and Connor):

Marchand: 70 GP - 28 G, 59 A, 87 P, +25
Ovechkin: 68 GP - 48 G, 19 A, 67 P, -12

So much resume building going on with Ovechkin, he didn't make the All-Star team only 3 times in his career, and two of those times he finished 3rd, missing out by the narrowest of margins. And of course he famously made it at two positions before as well.

2017/18 Voting (year Marchand missed a ton of games and nearly matched him in points):

Last year's top 5 is kind of funny to visualize:

I think this is where you'll see reputation and people disliking Marchand come into play. Really don't think a 20-point gap this year will mean anything.

Ovechkin has won the Richard twice before without being named to an All-Star team, so I don't think it's a guarantee that Ovechkin gets it.

20 points should be enough for Marchand, but I could see a situation where Ovechkin nudges him out by just a handful of points.
