With Kindl's improvement... and with Smith developing... and with Kronwall and Ericsson already signed... why do we want a $6M Lefthanded defenseman?

Smacks of desperation. getting a name just to get a name

It was apparently all just sepculation on Bob McKenzie's part. There is apparently speculation of a third team involved in the Iginla trade that may have held up the process.

I believe McKenzie was simply saying that "if Calgary was going to do a fire-sale then they could trade away Bouw to a team like Detroit for a prospect and a pick, something like a 1st + Nyquist....etc"

It was simply speculation on his part because of the whole Iggy situation today.

People have been calling for a PK specialist and defensively responsible Dman all season. Now there's the prospect of a guy coming here who plays that role and has the ability to put up 30-40 points on a season, and no one wants him.

I'm not sure if I said this already, but if Holland is going after J-Bo, he's doing so in order to get the most out of his roster for this year and next, while Datsyuk is still around.

As a point of reference, Bouwmeester's quality of competition ranking is 5th among defenseman that have played 10+ games, and 3rd among defenseman that have played 15+ games. He eats big minutes against the best of the best night-in and night-out, plays a ton on the PK, and is on pace for 40 points despite getting 2nd unit PP time.

Not for our best prospect and a 1st. This team needs a real goal scorer.

Just playing against the oppositions best players doesn't make you responsible defensively. He has been a plus player only once in his 10 year career and even then he was only +1. This season he ranks 716th in the stat with only 21 defenceman league wide performing worse.

He is similar to Kronwall, but worse defensively, and offensively. I don't think any of us would be advertising Kronwall as defensively responsible. He would also be the team leader in turnovers.

Considering what it would cost to attain him, his cap hit and his production, he's just not worth acquiring.

Look, if we didn;t have the kind of defense we have, I'd love Bouwmeester.

Bouwmeester is worth his cap hit. I like him.

But he's soft. He's a lefty.
Is he an upgrade on any of our defense? Pretty much. But by how much? And by what cost?

It seems like when Ken Holland is going out to dinner and ordering a mozzarella sticks for an appetizer, having pizza for dinner, and then eating cheese cake for desert.

We need a balanced defense,

I've mentioned a guy like Robidas -- who would cost less, cost less cap room - but more importantly, provide a right-handed shot, some physical play, and all around ability.

There are probably other guys out there who would also fit our needs.

You lose all credibility with that statement.

And you're right. Coaches tend to play defensively irresponsible players against the opposition's best players in the toughest situations.

this has to mean no dekeyser?

Detroit has been reportedly interested in J-Bo for over a year now.

And if we landed Dekeyser, that arguably makes it more likely that we'd trade for J-Bo (or make a similar impact trade). Holland would probably feel more comfortable trading a 1st or a top prospect after getting a top prospect for free.

If you're hell bent on getting Bouwmeester, assuming we get DD, you need to trade at least 1 and perhaps 2 defensemen away.

Jakub Kindl, Pulkinnen + a 2nd or 3rd

Then you still too many D. So you probably gotta dump White or CC

Kronwall Bouwmeester
Ericsson Smith
Quincey Dekeyser
Lashoff/White/Colaiacovo

That's pretty immature and in this day and age, inappropriate.

But back on OT - I don't disagree with that, but what we need and what we can get are two different things. Top pairing, two-way defenseman who can play 25+ minutes a night aren't available very often, just like perennial 30 goal scorers under the age of 30 aren't available very often.
