I like that group. The main guy to keep is Sheahan. And the main guy not to keep is Gagner. After that it's a toss up to me. I like Haas and Russell. Nygaard. I see something in Granlund still
Also Khaira is amongst the 1st to go.

If I was planning next season...

Benson/FA Signing/Chiasson
Nygard/Sheahan/Archibald
?
  • Benson steps in as 3LW, with a possibility of moving into the top 6 and bumping Neal down.
  • FA Signing for 3C, which is a dire need.
  • Chiasson is one of the better scorers here and we already have him signed.
  • Comes down to the size & grit of Khaira vs the speed of Nygard. Since our 3rd line has a pair of wingers not known for their speed, I opt for Nygard.
  • Sheahan's been good.
  • Extra forwards: Look for someone in the same vein as Rattie/Jurco. Not opposed to keeping P. Russell as well as our workhorse/pk specialist type.

I'd be rolling with

Benson - Haas - Chiasson
Nygard - Sheahan - Archibald

Next season.... pretty cheap bottom six so it gives us flexibility to acquire a good winger for the top 6.

This isn't me advocating for Granlund just want to point out that he's playing pretty well in the AHL, I wouldn't be surprised if he fights his way back to the NHL at some point, if not for us than some other team.

I put a vote in for Russell as it seems he rarely makes big mistakes and should eventually start capitalizing. A plus guy. (I believe plus minus has a lot of value with a big enough sample size) Could help the Condors at least. Underdog story. Kind of reminds me of Benning way back but a forward.

I did though think the same about Gambardella and doesn't look favorable for him.
What do I know anyway.

Archibald should replace Neil though that might handicap Sheahan a bit. I like the idea of him and Kasian with McDavid (not David).

Sheahan, Archibald, Chiasson, Russell.

Chiasson isn't as bad as some posters make out, he's just overpaid.

Sheahan and Archibald are good 4th line players.

I also like Russell as the 13th forward. He's cheap, versatile, and can fill in at multiple spots provided his minutes are limited.

Haas - Seemly does all the right things. Has some speed.
Nygard - Adjusting more to the ice. Has speed just lacks some other things but really feel like he's replaceable but you would rather have someone who has learned the system
Russell - A low event player who has had a bit of bad luck around the crease. Could be cheap
Sheahan - good PKer. Don't mind him on the team
Archibald - Good PKer who is somewhat like Kassian in he can move up the line up at times
Chaisson - PK who again can move up the line up if something needs to change.

I feel that most of them have been doing pretty well. Decent PKers who put up average numbers. Replacements are more than likely going to be more expensive. Get rid of some other guys and bring competition in.

Voted Haas, Nygard, Sheahan, and Archibald.

I’ve liked what I’ve seen out them. Archibald is my fav of the four. Sheahan is just solid. I think Haas has more to give, I don’t think hes been used as effectively as he could be. Nice to see him get some pk time and whatnot. Nygard most disappointing out of the four but I still like his speed and tenacity.

I don’t mind Chiasson. At his salary he will be here next year. I don’t think he makes much of a difference on the ice but I do think hes a good vet and likes the team.

As for the rest, they don’t move the needle. Khaira has some good moments but time to move on I think. No thanks on Gagner, Prussell. Granlund is meh but I would still rather him in the lineup than Gagner, Prussell but I wouldn’t bring him back. I wouldn’t mind a Jurco call up to see if he’s hungry but I don’t see him back either.

I picked 6 because until we have a replacement. Haas, Nygard, Archie, JJ, Sheahan and Chiason. Are the best of the list I think.

Why you dont like Haas or P Russell?
I think Haas can play pro here.

Why I don't like Haas for 3C

I feel that 3C is a big need for us, and Haas wouldn't be my first choice for that position. Would rather seek someone out who is more established, provides more offense, and can play top 6 wing if needed.

Strome actually fit this fairly well, despite having a down-year.

Ideal Extra Forwards

As for the extra forwards, I like that Chia and Holland gave Rattie and Jurco a chance. Sure, they are tweeners, but they have skill and you never know if they'll catch fire with one of our skilled C's. Rattie did previously, and his contract was great value for a time.

So I'd seek out a 'skilled' tweener.

As for the other extra forward, I don't place a huge emphasis on it. Ideally you want someone who gives a new look to your bottom 6. It's nice to have a utility guy (Letestu), energy/character (Hendricks/P. Russell), size/puck protection (Khaira).

I'm not sure who I'd want. You can make a case for Currie, Gambardella, and Marody. (I really liked Currie's game when he was up here)

It usually ends up being the coaches go to guy when he needs a player that he can trust defensively, works hard, and is coachable/low maintenance. Pakarinen for TMac, P. Russell so far for Tippett.

... or ens up with the player who is not waiver agile. No, I agree on that P.Russell may not be the final answer. But if he can shut down people, even if not scoring. He is doing a bottom 6 job in my book.
I think actually, even if Benson is called up, there is a need of one more forward - Yes. Granlund and Jurco
dissapointed as bottom 6 answers.

If we dont want Haas I think Edmonton needs to squeeze out good value - there is a player in there, who can skate and has size. And he can also shoot. I think he needs a bit confidence here.

I think Currie could be the best call up, as you also think. Well see.
IM still not sold on Chiasson. He has been big time dissapointment for me, and makes lines on this team harder to puzzle together, he fits with to few players on this team.

Fun fact.

Last season, Oilers forwards not named McDavid, Draisaitl or RNH combined for a total of 80 goals. This season, they combine for 73. That's on pace for 122!! Huge difference. Imagine now replacing just one of them with a legit top 6 guy.

I am late to the voting party but holy hell is it common sense to keep Nygard, Haas, Archie and Sheahan.

I just realised that all 4 of them are UFA next season.. I thought Haas and Nygard were RFA

I feel like Nygard - Sheahan - Archie is a perfect 4th line... when you have a fourth line with all 3 players getting 20pts at the end of the season you are doing great.

Haas is a decent cheap stop gap for next season while we wait for Mcleod to develop.

Agreed. I also dont mind keeping Gagner around as 13th forward, In case of any injuries in the top 6. If we can keep him for under 1M I think he has valuable.
