For me I don’t see them using a pick to deal him or taking a similarly so so player back. If he can get around 14-11-25 this year and next it’s good enough value IMO.
I’d try to offload him to a true contender at the deadline. Try to get a fourth round pick even.

Keep for sure IMO - Haas, Sheahan and Archie
Indifferent - Nygard
Keep only because serviceable and has term left - Chiasson

The same as me . I only voted for the 1st 3 base on not being so sure on Nygard . Chiasson needs to be traded for an upgrade if possible

I thought Granlund was improving as the year went on but he was being outplayed by Archibald, Nygard and Haas.

Archiabald, Sheahan, Nygard, Haas and Russell can be kept around but I’d like to see a couple of them pushed down the depth chart. Chiasson I don’t mind but I’d trade him if you can save a buck.

In my dream scenario we bring back Sheahan, Archibald, Haas and Nygard at 1 million or less to rotate on the 4th line and are able to get out of the Chiasson and Khaira's final years and can run something like this.

XXX - McDavid - Kassian
RNH - Draisatl - Yamamoto
Benson - XXX - Neal
Nygard/Sheahan/Haas/Archibald

Haas, Nygard, Sheahan, Archibald have all proven to be decent bottom 6 and should be brought back. Haas and Nygard are still learning to play on smaller ice and are continuing to improve. Sheahan and Archibald work well together on the PK and Archibald has proven he can slot into the top 6 when needed

For me my 2 locks are Archibald and Sheahan, I think they've performed admirably for playing a tier higher than they should realistically be in the line-up, move them down as a duo to their proper tier and I think they'd perform even better relative to the ice-time they get. Also seems like Archibald positively contributes to the team dynamic, brings a hard working, tenacious, punch above your weight class kind of element that is infectious; kind of like how Kris Russell teams always seem to be willing to block shots cause he sets an example of self sacrifice without a second thought.

My 2nd tier of I'd like to keep, but it's not a big deal if we didn't keep them is Patrick Russell and Alex Chiasson. Patrick Russell I just love the way he plays just a lot of smart low risk plays, not pissing a drop offensively, but it just feels like he never hurts you out there and unlike most 13th/14th forwards after a long downtime between games, he has great consistency in playing his brand of hockey without any rust or jitters. Chiasson to me, has been underwhelming on the year, but he was ice cold to start the year and has picked it back up to a level that I find acceptable for his price tag ($2M for 30 points seems pretty reasonable). In my ideal team next year I'd buy out Neal and I think it makes Chiasson a more sensible include, but if Neal were to stay I agree it makes him more expendable due to a duplication in attributes they bring.

The guy I'm right on the fence with Gaetan Haas, he hasn't struck me as someone who is quite at NHL level, but his rate of improvement to me has been high enough that I would ultimately give him another contract. To me I don't really want him at center so I would end up converting him to wing and I think his speed would benefit him there. I also foresee the level of strength he's seen out of NHL players is a bit of a wake-up call to him and a good off season of training could help bridge the gap that has been his weakness (50/50 puck battles and board battles).

Of the guys I don't want back:
  • Tomas Jurco- I'd be open to him as a 15/16th forward, but not quite upto snuff for the stipulations of my poll.
  • Joakim Nygard- Season isn't done might change my mind yet, but to me he just doesn't bring enough to the table and his speed alone just doesn't cut it, like Haas seems like he's physically overmatched quite often, but I haven't seen the same level of improvement since the start of the season.
  • Markus Granlund- just always wanted more bite/passion out of him and his greatest strength of being a good PKer seems amply covered by current personnel.
  • Juhjar Khaira- I still like him and the good version of Khaira is a solid 3rd liner quite easily, but consistency is an ongoing issue here and we get the sleepwalking Khaira too often and on consistency issues alone I'd have to pass on him. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he became a real solid player elsewhere.
  • Sam Gagner- Much love and respect to Sam, but he's only getting slower with age, just too soft and slow to be a real difference maker out there and his normal benefit of helping out a 2nd unit powerplay on a talent starved team doesn't really show itself here, cause we run our 1st unit so hard.

Yea, to me, Nygard is Nohands Nygard lol. Or Nohands McDavid. Guy has speed to burn and can be effective but without hands, hes a tweener at best throughout the line up. No issues with keeping but wouldn't be disappointed if he goes

I suspected I´ll vote as the rest, the popular 6. Organisation seems to lost hope on Jurco, even if Im not done with him. But he is old now, and gets injured all the time. And seemsed to not grab the opportunity once there was. TO Jurcos defence, he wanted to start the year in AHL to grow his game, so the Oilers bringed on Jurco much because, as usual, the lack of A-talent on the team... But yeah

In order, keep :
Nygård - I think he can grow into a good player in bottom 6.
Sheahan - Under 30, and a good C now he can score too.
Haas - Here is more to get. Once he settle down, I think he can understand how to score, and how to play defence like a pro. Clearly struggles with the NA style.
Archibald - Qucik player, that doesnt score that many goals, can PK.
P.Russell - Many in here doesnt lke him, he cant score for his life. But his defensive, and PK abillitys is good. WHen P.Russel is on the team, they play a better PK. And let in fewer goals. I think they should keep, and refine P.Russel to a PK specialist.
Chiasson - I think he stays becuase he sometimes can score goals, and is a big body, and has played a lot of games with the core - but thats it! His natural skating is bad. If Oilers finds a better player, Chiasson should be first to go.

close- Jurco. Im not done with him. He clearly has talent. I just dont understand why the puzzle doesnt get sloved.

Done with:
Khaira. He is a good PK:er. But in my eyes, he is somewhat clumsy with the puck. I hope any other team can at least give Oilers a 3rd rounder. I see on the mainboards, that some teams asks about him. He has some PK abillity.
Gagner - .. no.. he is not a NHL quality player any more. Sorry.
Markus Granlund Injurys has probably taken his carrier. To bad for him. Done in NHL already I guess.

Sheahan, Archibald are no brainers.
I think Haas and Nygard fit that bill as well for me, but obviously less established.
They are good solid bets for me as the North American game becomes more commonplace.

The rest I'm relatively indifferent. Chiasson has been so hit or miss this year. Khaira I'm really disappointed in over the last 2.5 years now. No idea where his skating and physicality went, he was so much more tenacious in 16-17.

  1. Holland acquires a top 6 W (Kapanen, Athanasiou, etc)
  2. Signs a legit 3C
  3. Brings up Benson
  4. Craft a 4th line out of the remainder
Athanasiou/McDavid/Kassian
Nuge/Drai/Yams
Benson/?/Neal
Nygard/Sheahan/Archibald
Haas

I'd be alright with dealing both of Khaira and Chiasson.

yup, this seems to be the consensus lineup with Hall and Pageau being the top end XXXs. AA and Tierney being the low end ones.

Honestly I can't make a decision like this till the season is over. The first couple months really showed how there was a lack of chemistry throughout the roster, now things are looking better. Thank goodness.

Archibald - Wish we had 4 of him. He's never going to score 20 goals or 30 assists for us, but I love absolutely everything else about this player.
Sheehan - He's vital to our PK. Didn't expect him to be nearly this effective. Doesn't score, but if you can give him so many minutes on the PK while managing to kill penalties more often than most teams, it's great because you don't have to use your star player's stamina when you're down a man.
Has - Getting better as the season goes on. I'd resign him to a 2-3 year deal. He'll be cheap and I have faith that he's good enough to be a full time NHLer for years to come.
Nygard - I only picked him because I don't see the talent on the farm team pushing him out of the line-up. It's frustrating watching him handle and shoot the puck. He's a softer version of Brad Marchant.
Russell - If we have to I don't mind having him as a 13th forward, but he doesn't bring enough to the table for me to feel like we'd be making a huge mistake if we let him go.
Khaira - When he feels like playing I absolutely love him. When he's motivated he's as valuable to our team as Kassian has been this year. Problem is shows up and plays almost as seldom as Alexi Kovalev did. Oh yeah, now THAT's how you burn a lazy player!
Gagner - Before I rip on the guy, I wanna say that I love this guy. Love his personality and love the grit he tries to bring. He's been in a half a dozen fights with guys WAY above his weight class. That being said, I'd only want Gagner back if free agency didn't exist and Yamma wasn't NHL ready and even then I'd only offer him league minimum.
Granlund - This guy is so meh that I can't even rip on the guy. He can skate and play on the PK and that's about it. Heck, he's in the minors. Cannot imagine a scenario in which it makes sense to bring him back. He'll get a job in the off-season. Stingy Ottawa will surely be interested.
Jurco - Former 2nd round pick has had 9 years to figure out how to take fringe PPG AHL offense and convert it into the NHL and he's failed miserably. Holland obviously brought him on because he drafted him. He's 27 now and he's failed to play more than 70 games in a season since his first season with Grand Rapids. Even if we're paying him league minimum, I'm going to be concerned that we're making it harder than it needs to be to stay under the 50 contract limit.
Chiasson - We knew he wasn't going to score 20 goals this year, but my god man. You make Khaira's consistency look tolerable. If Holland can get rid of his contract without taking anything poisonous in return, that'll be his 2nd miracle move.

I like that group. The main guy to keep is Sheahan. And the main guy not to keep is Gagner. After that it's a toss up to me. I like Haas and Russell. Nygaard. I see something in Granlund still

JJ has some toughness in him. I think he can rebound and become a consistent player..keep
Archibald and Sheehan are work horses.. Keep
Haas - not sold on him
Nygard- speed, speed...keep
P.Russell- don't see any value in him .
Gagner.. his skating is so poor, he can't do much with that anymore. I wish it were different because I like him
Granlund- invisible.. No

Good thing Holland didn't clean house and dump all these guys after a couple months when there were some fans that were screaming they needed to do just that. Seems there are some useful pieces there, after all.
