Here is what I have for our "current cap"...not including all players that are ELC...so far 18 players signed and 2 RFAs:

PlayerPOSAge2020-2021
KrejciC34$7,250,000
BergeronC35$6,875,000
PastrnakW24$6,666,667

CoyleC/W29$5,250,000
DeBruskW24RFA
KaseW25$2,600,000
BjorkW24$1,600,000
RitchieW25$1,498,925
WagnerC/W29$1,350,000
KuralyC/W28$1,275,000
LindholmW29$850,000
?
?
McAvoyD23$4,900,000
CarloD24$2,850,000
MooreD30$2,750,000
GrzelcykD27RFA
CliftonD26$1,000,000
MillerD33$1,250,000

?
RaskG34$7,000,000
HalakG35$2,250,000
Backes NA$1,500,000.00
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

TOTAL IS $64,840,592. With cap at $81,500,000, doesn't that leave us with $16,659,408?

Any corrections that need to be made to this?

So, basically we need 2-4 players signed to complete the roster, correct?

John Moore is gonna be in our top 4.

As for money. Am I being too optimistic here?
Gryz ~2.5-3
DeBrusk 3.5-4

Around 9-10 to spend.

But don't think we are spending to cap this year.

So, now how do we fix everything?

Part of me wants to move Rask and Krejci and semi-blow things up. Another part of me wants to go for it for 2 more years...keep Rask, keep Krecjci, move Debrusk, sign Grzelcyk, sign Hall and Pieterangelo and somehow move Moore...fill in the rest with minor leaguers.

Not sure if that would work long term though....and not sure if it is truly possible.

I know if I was Sweeney I wouldn't get much sleep the next few days. At least he hasn't made the decision one way or the other yet which still gives us 2 options.

The Bruins cap situation is so much better than the Chia era. Thank God they learned from that mess.

I would have said too little for debrusk on a long term deal... but given all the factors, a 2 year deal makes more sense for both the player and the team now and that does seem ballpark to me.

grezlyk probably cant convince anyone he has done more than brandon carlo. both are primarily defense first bottom 4 dmen. I think the easiest way to keep harmony on the team is to give grezlyck the same 2 year 2.85 deal carlo got... this is slightly more than moore got... it puts everyone in a hiarchy that makes sense

McAvoy at the top... because hes the best
carlo/grezlyck in the middle... they are the next wave
moore at the bottom... where he has belonged so far
complete the team with chara on a retirement deal...letting him go out on his own terms
then Clifton gets his million because he signed long term
lauzon/zboril are elc guys

8 dmen... we cant employ anyone else unless we get rid of one of these names... less than 18 mill for our defense which frees up enough cap room to realistically sign up front

you are missing the bonus overage penalty... to keep things simple lets call it an even million dollars since the team has already decided to only take 1/2 this year and 1/2 next year

so subtract almost a million from your cap number and that leaves us with 15,660,000 at the most to spend

you have 18 players signed... that means realistically at least 5 guys to complete the roster... teams dont really ever operate with less than 23 men on a normal basis. Toronto has an assanine idea they are going to try a 20 man roster this year... wait and see what happens lmfao.

debrusk at 4 or less... is reasonable
grezlyck at 3 or less... is reasonable
chara is a strong possibility... even if we bonus him his base should be around 1
we have 2 prime asset kids that are not waiver eligible... im saying they will get a chance to win a job
zboril and senyshyn should both be under a mill..

this is 5 guys for 10 mill... it leaves us 5.5 million UNSPENT DOLLARS that we could try to upgrade the team with

you wanted to move debrusk/moore… creating around 6.75 mill extra space... bringing our number to replace these two to around 12.25 mill

IN NO UNIVERSE WILL YOU GET BOTH HALL AND PIETRIANGELO FOR 12 MILL

we do have enough to get just hall... we take our available 5.5 mill you have found... add Bjork 1.35... hard ball debrusk and grezlyck to create another 600 k there...

we can go 7.5 mill to hall keeping your lineup.

if we move wagner and replace him with an elc that takes us up to 8 mill

so... adding hall without losing anyone of significance besides Bjork/wagner is actually doable

the lineup after we trade Bjork/wagner… sign hall... promote studnicka/senyshyn/zboril

hall/krejci/pastrnak {one hell of a line}
marchand/Bergeron/kase {would be the first line on at least 25 other teams}
debrusk/coyle/studnicka {amazing depth to let debrusk find himself in less pressure role here}
Ritchie/kuraly/senyshyn {im not just handing senyshyn a job... if he can win it we promote kuhlman}
Lindholm {going with just 13 forwards we need a versatile 3 position guy as the 13}

grezlyck/McAvoy {this would be a position we try to upgrade next year when rask/krejci take paycuts}
moore/carlo {we are stuck with moore for now... so let him try to rebuild some value}
chara/lauzon {the vet gets one last kid to mentor before retirement hands up his skates}
zboril/Clifton {zobril gets a chance to rest chara some days... Clifton is around to inject energy when needed}

rask {lets hope he has convinced the team he wants to stay}
halak {one of the 5 best backups in hockey}

in depth we got
Federic... he will keep Ritchie honest... if Ritchie doesnt keep his job, we bring up federic
beecher… needs seasoning... could fight for a top 3 job next year if we let krejci walk
lauko... another candidate to end up taking the 4th line if kuraly or Ritchie or senyshyn fail
steen… will be in competition for a 4th line job soon
kuhlman… the odds on favorite to replace Lindholm soon as the 13th forward

a lot of 3rd/4th line guys... if we are going to replace top 6 guys we will be looking at free agency/trades and using cap out for cap in

on defense
vaakainanen…. our best best to replace moore at the earliest opportunity unless zboril steps up
ahcan… could fast track to boston if McAvoy/grezlyck cant qb our pp.
wolfe…. got a gut feeling he will replace someone in the bottom 3 soon

in goal vladar is closest to getting some time if any injuries hit... but by next season swayman could replace him as the backup goalie in waiting.

looking ahead to next year... I think after another year of financial struggles... the guys in Arizona will be more desperate than ever to move Larsson... at that time I think his price will go way down even from where it was this year. I could see us landing him and sending moore back as a cap dump to make the contract easier to swallow... perhaps sending both grezlyck and moore to them since Larsson will be earning 30 million dollars real cash for 3 years due to his contract structure. if we retain a bit on moore/grezlyck we might make it work without giving up much extra.

it will depend how our kid dmen develop this year whether we can trade 2 vets for 1 next off-season

up front... I do like the idea of bring krejci back but no way in hell he is a 7.25 mill player anymore. even at 5.5 mill that will save us 1.75. we are also saving the backes retention... so those 3 mill are plenty of dollars to get carlo resigned long term.

rask also... wont be able to command 7 mill on a lengthy deal. something around 5 mill like holtby took will be a lot more realistic. im not even sure he will sign another deal... but freeing up 2 mill on his contract will be enough to resign kase

so... all of our important rfa/ufa will be able to resign.

the kids will improve with experience... the old players have logical replacements waiting... its set up great

we got the ONE HOLE on the team we can fill this year... someone that gives us 3 line scoring...

signing hall is a domino. letting Bergeron/marchand feast on weaker checking in a second line role. letting debrusk find his game in even weaker checking with a playmaker like studnicka and a solid 2-way puck pocession guy like coyle

we can move studnicka to center as soon as he is ready... coyle can easily slide to rw..

Gryz is a contract ahead of Carlo tho. There will be UFA years

Gryz is a contract ahead of Carlo tho. There will be UFA years

none of the guys seem to be pushing for long term deals with this covid thing and the flat tax and the horrific escrow levels.

if he signs a 1 year deal... he will be an ufa next year at age 27
if he signs a 2 year deal as I propose... he will be an ufa when its done and perhaps covid will also be done

if im boston… considering how tight the cap is... I offer him 2 mill for a 1 year deal... or 2.85 for a 2 year deal... hes a 3rd pair dman that has neve scored more than 21 points in a season... hes undersized...

I think his agent is going to tell him take the extra 850 k a year and lock in for 2 years

Have we ever heard anything from ownership indicating that they will be spending to the cap this year. I worry with the loss of concessions we may have an internal cap this year of 5-10 million less.

Hmm. If Hall comes in a 8m or thereabouts, it is going to be tight to resign all four of those RFAs. I would expect one or more of them to be moved, or salary cleared out somewhere else. Looking at it this way, it makes the Miller signing and the timing of it really weird. That $1 mil allocated for that could come in handy re-upping on of the RFAs. It will be interesting to see what they do.

More importantly, if they do sign Hall, that green square becomes impossible to fill without moving someone.

Unless of course it's Chara

Yes the 260lb elephant in the room :laugh: Well, it's no secret that I am a fan of letting Chara walk, but I have to think the team will need to make a deal for an LD in that case. JDB looks like the likely man out in that case. In some kind of package he might bring back a Hanifin or someone comparable. :popcorn:
