Morgan Rielly is clearly better than Chara at this point in his career. Chara would easily be in their top four though, of course.

Phenomenal. I'm so glad hes willing to do these 1 year deals and isnt pushing for a longer contract. Hes still a top pairing dman and an elite PKer. Love it.

it's not just the 1 year thing either. That contract is ridiculously in favor of Boston. Hell 1 year at 4 million (no bonuses needed) would have been a steal. Just a fantastic deal for Boston. Jealous.

Hes definitely still a serviceable D but against top teams in the league that can skate. I would limit him. What are his av minutes like right now?

Chara plays average 2nd pairing minutes at 5 on 5 and plays top PK minutes. From a TB POV, think Strahlman mins at even and McD on the PK.

He is the Bruins top LD, but the Bruins give him a rest and roll McAvoy out with Grzelcyk or Krug several shifts a game to keep Chara’s mins down. McAvoy is and has been the Bruins #1D. Carlo also plays more at 5 on 5 than Chara. Krug and Chara play similar minutes...but obviously Chara’s are way harder.

I would like to see him get 2nd/3rd pairing minutes + PK time during regular season to keep him fresh for the playoffs - then decide round by round if you need him to play a bigger role.

I mean this is exactly what they do.
