Good deal. Carlo and McAvoy to get paid in a few years when Backes/Krejci deals are up.

He led the NHL in GA/60 last year. Guy is a total stud. Wish it was for 8 years but the Bruins are keeping the salaries low for the short term to take another few runs at it.

The short answer: Yes.

The long answer: Yes. LMFAO

Do people not understand the impact of term?

Dubas' has the Leaf core locked up for 5 more years. Think about how much inflation can happen in that point (as a Bruins fan, you should know better than anyone the value of signing a player at the right time).

Matthews - 5yrs
Tavares - 6yrs
Marner - 6 yrs
Nylander - 5yrs

The only player Boston has signed with that kind of term is Marchand, who is 31.

Sweeney is making hay while the sunshines, and he will probably get undue criticism when in 2-3 years, he has no choice but to up his RFAs at inflated numbers post bridge.

Uhhhh, Andersen and Rielly are free agents at the same time as Carlo and McAvoy. Only the Leafs will be paying UFA money and the Bruins will still have RFA control.

Pasta and Clifton are also on bargains for another 4 years.

Sure but in 5 years McAvoy will still have 5 years on his next deal (hypothetically) and all the Toronto guys will be hitting UFA at the same time in their prime (except Tavares of course).

Yes the Bruins could have McAvoy are Carlo for cheaper when they are 25 or 26. But, they will be cheaper at 27 to early 30s.

Bruins will have plenty of space to pay McAvoy and Carlo more when they are 25 or 26 and Krejci, Backes, Chara, Seidenberg, Beleksey, etc are off the books.

1. Dubas has bought UFA years on each of the contracts for the big 3

2. Signing short bridge deals can crush you later on (see: Subban)

So it’s better to pay them top 10 salaries now for an extra 2 or 3 years then pay them a lot less money on a short term deal then re-up them while they are still RFA’s in 2 or 3 years because you might have to pay them a lot then? So just pay them a lot right now for an extra 2 or 3 years but have them be a UFA?

Do people not understand that you don't always have to think 5 years in the future?

Sweeney has the Bruins core locked up for 3 more years on great deals. Think about how they now have the cap flexibility to do some real damage in the next few years.

He may be making hay while the sunshines, but if the team goes on to win a cup or make a couple deep runs in the playoffs nobody is going to care if he signs McAvoy and Carlo to bigger deals.

It not just about the term, It just seems to me Toronto has to overpay to keep players happy and wanting to play there

It's really hard to tell as no one else has actually signed a long term RFA deal yet, outside of Provorov and Keller. If we look at what Keller made, it's much closer to Marner's deal based on their production differences.

If Carlo or McAvoy had signed 6 or 8 years at a great AAV, then we might actually be able to make a judgement. So far every other GM has conceded to the RFA wants in giving them a 3 year deal.

Sweeney and Benning look great now, but they've kicked the can down the road. Apples to oranges.

I'd rather sign McAvoy and Carlo to 8 year deals when they are still RFAs at 23 or 24 than signing them at 26 or 27 and getting stuck with decline years.

Also, how many UFA years do you think Dubas bought? lol.

Sweeney should hold a masterclass on these team friendly deals players are signing. These type of deals are going to keep them ahead of teams that do not negotiate as well, with the follow in line signing within team structure. Well done Boston again.
