Anybody else a fan of any of these bands:

Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams' old band)
Ryan Adams
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
Townes Van Zandt
Old Crow Medicine Show
Neko Case

I've just become the biggest southern music fan this side of the border..

Any other recommendations...

(I don't expect much feedback, but if you have any inkling...go for it)

I love Neko Case.

I also love me some alt country. Some others that would probably fit the bill (some are more folk than country) off the top of my head:

Cuff the Duke
Uncle Tupelo
Magnolia Electric Co.
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Calexico
Son Volt
Megan Reilly
The Mountain Goats
Lucinda Williams
and pretty much anything Gram Parsons have ever done.

A couple others that are more on the border of alt. country and rock:

Wilco
Band of Horses
M. Ward
Patty Griffin

I'm going to check out everything bolded....I have most of the others mentioned..

Thanks man..

I'm in full out infatuation mode over Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (I saw them open for Bright Eyes like a year ago, but I've finally given them their fair shot)...

Oh, and I've got a good feeling that the new Conor Oberst that comes out in a couple weeks will be a pretty good alt-country record...

Alt country > all. Well, almost.

Uncle Tupelo put out four of the best albums of the 90s in a row before splitting up.

I also often listen to Wilco (ok, only 1 alt country album, but still), Drive-By Truckers, and Gram Parsons/late Byrds.

I'll second the recommendation for Son Volt. 'Methamphetamine' and 'Windfall' are two of my favorites.

Try The Jayhawks as well. 'Blue' is catchy, same as 'Save It For A Rainy Day'

I've had some friends turn me on to some newer stuff lately, like Langhorne Slim and AA Bondy. I don't know if they're more folk than alt country. I'm over 30 and don't really care for what it's labelled as anymore, as long as I like it.

I love Ryan Adams.

Not as much as I love Drive-by Truckers though. Seriously, these guys are gods. They lost some steam when Jason Isbell left the band, but they're still great.

I dont really consider him country, because country today all sounds the same. But Corb Lund is fantastic.

I guess it falls under the old-time category, Corb used to be in a rock band called the Smalls.

I like Uncle Tupelo, have heard a bit of and liked Son Volt and Calexico. Also listen to Wilco and Band of Horses regularly. Haven't really had a chance to listen to any of the other bands mentioned in this thread so far. This kind of music is very hard to come by, if one doesn't want to pay for it..

I love this thread.

In addition to bands already mentioned, I'd throw in...

Allison Krauss & Union Station
Hank Williams III (although he's more cowpunk/rockabilly)
The Duhks

This stuff is great, thanks guys...definitely an underappreciated genre in most circles...

You all need to listen to some Gram Parsons, youtube has a few of his tunes.

Uncle Tupelo is great, they were just kids when they were playing some of the best music of that time.

Eh, I don't think Isbell added too much except another guitar. "Decoration Day" is the only DBT song of his that I really like ("Danko/Manuel" is pretty good too).

"Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." — Steve Earle.

"I've met Bob Dylan and his bodyguards, and I don't think Steve [Earle] could get anywhere near his coffee table." — Townes Van Zandt.

 He had such a great, dry sense of humor. I highly recommend the movie Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt to anyone who wants to investigate a bit about the man.
