Barely nobody on Portland's roster can play above average defense. Dame plays none whatsoever. That's simply not a recipe for success.

He is so productive offensively that they need to find players that can make up for his lack of defensive prowess. They need another big that is competent. With Nurkic off the floor they were awful.

Generally Unmanageable Neil Olshey is said to like Chauncey Billups. Olshey trying to steer this way is probably why Mike D’Antoni is also considered a finalist… considering his defensive record.
