I guess the first one of these guys would be Lon Chaney (1883-1930) who was known as The Man of a Thousand Faces (The Phantom of the Opera; The Hunchback of Notre Dame; Mr. Wu; ; The Ace of Hearts; London after Midnight--all silent). His son, Lon Chaney, Jr., sort of followed in his footsteps by starring in a shitload of horror movies, including the original The Wolfman.
Modern day, Oldman is as good a choice as anyone. I'd say Tilda Swinton, too, except for the fact that whatever her make-up or appearance, Swinton somehow always looks like Swinton. But as an actress, she has an incredible range. Up and comer: Eddie Redmayne, god help us all.
