They are doing their typical “Pens fans complex” crap here. Ceci sucks. They paid Ceci 500k more than Chara.

if you did a poll on the Pens forum (and all of hockey, for that matter, on the mains) of type rather have Ceci or Chara (regardless of salary), you get overwhelming support for Chara.

then if you changed the poll to include their salaries? It would be 99 to 1 for Chara. I mean, come on.

    So. Many. Options.

add to it that now the Caps can trade from excess at the TDL if it makes sense, to maximize the season and try and cure whatever ails them (F or G.....doubt it’s D, unless injuries)

    In GMBM we trust!!!

(it also begs the question — would we rather have Lundqvist, or Anderson/Chara??.... as those are the monetary metrics now)

I once saw Chara on the street in Montreal, coming out of a restaurant.

I’m 6’ tall, he was one head taller than me and actually had to duck under the door frame to come out.

He’s scary in person, didn’t dare to stop him to ask for a pic or anything.

If you guys ever see him in person, he’s quite an impressive guy.

Hope they find a good way to use Z for max 16-18/gm; likely PK specialist and mostly DZ starts, nice security/depth feeling that he can do short term in any pairing

The recipe for The Cup can go many directions, PIT proved the Speed theorem in 16+17 that kicked the speed push into high gear, then WSH+STL showed the heavy game still works, and TBL leaned into a heavy game too
As much as the game is moving in the speed direction, come Playoffs if you're pounding teams into submission all war-of-attrition style you can win that way too. The fastest skaters are ineffective when they're on their wallets a big chunk of the game

I would be shocked to find Chara doing anything other than playing Orpik's role. 3rd pair. 1st pk.

Saw him in a parking garage in Boston. He was driving around a corner and I quickly recognized him and his head partially touching the top of the car.

Gave him a wave and he rolled down the window and said hello. Extremely nice and humble guy.

Chara is a great value signing. Quality leadership, physicality, and defensively he can still play.

I’m literally speechless for the people who I have seen crap on it.

Listening to everyone speak about how he's a safety blanket reminded me of the old Ron Wilson CAPS commercials with Chris Simon protecting Peter Bondra in the grocery store.

Their board has become even more toxic than usual in the last few months. I don’t know if they have new posters or what but there’s not a lot of genuine hockey talk there, just a lot of immature, crude, and homophobic slandering.

At this point even if you were a Pens fan I don’t know why that board would be enjoyable.

They’ve always had very lax mods regarding posts that say uncouth things about players so I guess you reap what you sow.

I loved Simon. Adored him. One of my favorite all time Caps (and part of my name).

    Guy was a freaking animal.

Its to take eyes off of their offseason moves. Since the Pens last cup win , most of JR's moves have been bad. The core is declining and it looks like Sullivan is starting to lose the team. Add in all of JR's moves to make them "contenders" and this is a ship thats beginning to sink. To be fair the Caps are on the decline as well, just not as much as the Pens. Even after OV and Backstrom, they Caps have some nice building blocks in McMichael, Lapierre, Fehervary, Alexeyev, and Samsonov which is much better than what the Pens have. The Caps now just have to find a future Wing.

Yup. McCarthy said it himself during his presser, I believe, after he joined the team.

That is a whole lot of nothing and promises. I am hoping Samsonov is as good as Varly. Maybe we will see that this season. Maybe its just the weird nature of this season and the rosters required but I thought the team saw Fehervary as ready and instead he is buried in the depth chart. Its worse with Alexeyev. Lapierre is a hero or zero pick(or am I wrong) and McMichael isnt ready.

I remember when the system was stacked with 4 or 5 legit defensemen and so far Siegenthaler is all we have at the NHL level and he just got pushed out of the lineup himself

Yup. Thats where I got that from. Thanks. Meanwhile, I have been interested to see that NHL Network had Chara on a 2nd pair with Orlov on the right and no non Caps media has Jensen in the lineup at all. NHLN had the Caps 3rd pair as Siegenthaler and TVR

Never called them all superstars. But I do think they could be decent pieces. Better than what the Pens have.

I am hopeful too, but I have always been more of a prove it kind of fan when it comes to prospects. Samsonov is at the sink or swim point. We have seen that in managed back up goalie games he is an overmatch and we found that last year he wasnt ready for starting goalie games. That should come with experience.

I am concerned about both McMichael and Fehervary. The hype here had McMichael on the 2nd line pushing Vrana and now it looks like he is marginal for taxi squad duty. I dont get the treatment of Fehervary at all.

Yea, it seems like this bunch is better than the Pens bunch but the Pens seem to get legit contributions from young players out of nowhere and the Caps dont.

What a weird way to look at it. CMM is only 19 years of age. He’s centering the top line for a stacked Team Canada right now at the WJC. Just because people here had unrealistic expectations for him this season doesn’t mean he’s not on track.

Fever is 21. Feel free to Google some of the defenseman around the league and the age they broke out.

How did samsonov prove he wasnt ready to start when he easily had the best numbers of any goalie on the team? Is it because of his short slump at the end of the season? Because that is a very small sample size to be basing it off of

People who thought McMichael was going to slot into the top six were delusional, he'd either play on the bottom six or we'd need to wait another year, there is no need to be concerned about a 19 year old not immediately being ready to crack the roster. And would you be willing to go more into what you mean about fehervary?

McMichael is in “Wilson land”. Too good for the Q, not good enough (or big enough, as Wilson had that going for him) to play in DC....and cannot play in the AHL.

it’s a dumb rule that he cannot play in the A. That would be easily be the best for everyone involved.

I dont have unrealistic expectations for McMichael. I hope he can take up Eller's role when he is done with it. I just dont see a replacement for Backy or Kuzy there.

As to Fehervary, I am fully support that defense is a part of hockey that places a premium on experience. The young defensemen that make an impact are highly offensively skilled players. Fehervary is a defender. He needs the time. That said, I see the Caps make room for him last season and even skate him up the lineup. To go from there to 10th on the depth chart concerns me. I didnt have unrealistic expectations of him, but thought he was on the team this season. Instead he is so far away that he couldnt hit it with a rock.

I am not trusting in young players. Who has been the last caps young player to really succeed? Vrana is on the hotseat after two bad playoffs and Burakovsky failed. Siegenthaler just got cut out. I am hopeful but not counting my chicks

Sammy was spotless as a back up goalie. Back up goalie games are well managed as were his. With Holtby struggling a bit and Samsonov perfect, they gave him some starting goalie games and he stubbed his toe in them. Lets not call that skid at the end a slump. He was on a roll as the back up and given starting goalie responsibility got a rude awakening. Its like taking a good young D doing well on the 3rd pair and watching him get punching in the mouth stepping in to the top 4. Its SOP. Its not a slump.

The whole thing is a small sample size. He has 22 NHL starts. Its a small sample size.

Further I said that those starting goalie successes should come with experience.

Again, my expectations are managed. This is a kid who owes his team an apology over that injury. He is in a locker room with some of the biggest stars in the game and who expect to win. The new head coach is a red faced screamer with pressure to win from the drop of the puck. To say the load being dropped on that kid is heavy is an understatement.
