Might be going away to a place with Cabins, forest retreat etc in the September time. One of my friends has a girlfriend and she asked us to bring female companions with us. As someone who is terrible at that kind of thing and has no confidence whatsoever and would not be surprised to be alone forever, this is something that worries me. I don't want to let her down and it would be nice as I have just bought my own place but at the same time that kind of thing, not terrify, but makes me nervous/anxious etc. Urgh, f***...

Why do you have to bring a girl with you? Tell her you fly solo

This one is hitting a little too close to home for me. ****. **** **** **** **** ****.

****.

Are you doing okay?

I don't know how to word this but he had quite the influence on many, many generations. If my grandparents were still alive I feel like they'd watch him. I know for a fact my parents do, my brothers does, and anyone I've ever dated has. He's opened many portals and I'm excited to travel because of him. I respect all he's done and I'm more than sad it's ended this way.

I'm sad he's gone, but I'm glad I've watched his journey. Any drink I have in a foreign country I will be sure to dedicate it to him.

My gf was a huge fan of Bourdain's, she was actually shook by it. It's weird to be that sad about a celebrity death, but hey I remember when Robin Williams took his life, that one really hit me since I grew up watching him on tv and also his movies.

Yesterday was rough, I won't lie, but thankfully I have friends who helped me get through it. Thank you.

Depression is a motherf***er and it's hard to explain it to someone who doesn't have it. Bourdain's suicide was especially hard-hitting because he was someone who had everything I ever wanted, and it still wasn't enough to quiet those voices. That's haunting. Bourdain is, more than anyone, responsible for my wanderlust and desire to see the world, to meet actual people when I travel and not just be a f***ing tourist. I'm not a chef and my diet is limited because of health problems so I could never afford to be as risky with the food as I'd have liked, but the times I have gone well outside of my comfort zone are largely thanks to him. Whenever I went somewhere that he had been, I had to make a note of what he did so I could try it if the opportunity arose. One of my proudest moments was being able to go "that wasn't so bad," after eating what he called the worst food he'd ever eaten (hákarl). Honestly his most lasting influence will be him raising the level of awareness of the Ugly American stereotype and pushing people to be empathetic towards each other. Being the kind of traveler that Bourdain advocated for is responsible for so many of my favorite memories, especially those when I was brought to family meals by relative (or complete) strangers.

It's been a couple years since I've watched him regularly, but I don't think I've ever actually taken a death this hard...that's when you know you've lost someone special. I don't think it hit me just how big of an influence on me he had until we lost him.

Never meet your heroes has long been a mantra of mine, but Mr. Bourdain was one of the rare exceptions of someone who I would have loved to meet. Sadly I never got that chance, but I can guarantee that every time I fly out of LAX now, I'll be stopping at that In-N-Out near it (for that particular In-N-Out he was a total fanboy). I may need to make a trip back to my old haunt, as the second episode of Parts Unknown was set in the neighborhood I had just moved to in LA a couple months prior. Unfortunately that episode was pulled from syndication because of someone in it being someone CNN didn't want to be identified with, but my favorite places in my old neighborhood were introduced to me by him. It was like a moving gift, even if it was just convenient timing.

I think she mostly wants us to get with people, or at least have people to bring with us when we go out so she's not the only one. I can get her point as it is a bit of a sausage fest otherwise.

Anyone that has gone through depression, forget if it's severe or otherwise, knows the battle and knows that you don't "beat" depression, you learn to "manage" depression. I lost a good decade and a bit to it really controlling my life and even now there are times I really feel it at times, but it's so odd how people don't talk about it enough considering the deaths due to it. Even with retired athletes who have severe depression from the CTE they've developed, some how people are still afraid to really openly talk about Depression.

Maybe I'm just annoyed because I own a steelbook copy of the Synapse 4K restoration of the original "Suspiria" and generally hate all horror remakes.

Not to mention I saw said Synapse restoration of "Suspiria" on the big screen last October. :yo: :yo: :yo: What an experience!! :D

Seems weird to have someone tell you "hey bring some women up there"...I feel like this how people get in trouble.

So my gf and her friends went to see Ocean's Eight, I elected to you know, stay at home.

Me: How was the movie?
Her: I mean, it wasn't terrible. *awkward laugh...*
Me: Haha, ok so was it good?
Her: I mean, I wouldn't say that either?

....

I can't wait for the all female cast re-make of Casino.

I just wish they would make original with mostly female casts if they want to make more movies starring women. They are setting themselves up to fail by starting the projects off with a dumb idea. Ocean's 8 and the new Ghostbusters don't suck because of their female casts, they suck because nobody wants reboots of those series with a whole new cast regardless of who it is. But forcing the all-female angle is just an even more obvious sign of pandering.

Could Hollywood use an infusion of good female roles? Absolutely it could, and it should strive to move in that direction. But not like this. Don't shoehorn a female cast into someone else's idea, come up with an idea that makes sense to have a female cast. It can work. It has worked. Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect, Mean Girls, A League of their Own, Clueless, Kill Bill, etc. Instead of making movies that are about having a large female ensemble cast with the actual movie being secondary, make good movies that are about female characters. Make more movies like Three Billboards, iTonya, Ladybird, Wonder Woman, or Ingrid Goes West. Hell, even if Atomic Blonde is a rip-off of John Wick, at least they didn't make Jane Wick

Speaking of female casts, I watched Annihilation last night. If you like sci-fi with some horror elements thrown in, I strongly suggest it.

That bear creature's screams...

So, I am going to do this camping malarky. I need to get out more and hiking is something I really enjoy. Some of the places I want to go are over 200km away so that makes for a very long day trip when you factor in the walk too.

Looked at a few tents and whilst cost is a factor and also want something that is decent and fairly roomy. I have it down between two Coleman tents, Sundome or Highline II. The Highline is made exclusively for Walmart and the other is at Canadian Tire. They are the same tent except for the footprint, the Sundome is square at 10ft x 10ft and the Highline II is rectangle at 12ft x 8ft.

Don't ignore the height. Dome tents with shock cord poles are easy to set up, but the usable space can be smaller than you would think based on footprint depending on how the walls are angled.

I have 5 tents, varying sizes. I will always recommend the square over rectangle. Also be aware of the weather you are going in. Always Dome.

Smaller = Hotter (winter), Better for winter months (usually 2-5 people tent size)
Medium = Good for anytime, really, but be careful in the winter, might be too big. (4-6 is usually considered medium)
Big = Great for the summer, but also don't get it if it's just you. (6-8+)

We have a 10 person, an 8 person, a 6 person, and a 5 person tent (my fav) and another 10 person tent that just feels massive. I think we use the 5 person tent more often than none, it's a self setting one and a Coleman tent. I bought in Portland when our 6 person tent that my gf packed on our camping trip to Seattle was without the poles and pins because you know, she's fantastic at packing (not).

This is the one we use the most (5 person) - Coleman - Outdoor Camping Gear & Equipment

We were staying so close to Portland that we just drove in and went to Costco, originally just looking for something cheap, we saw that Coleman one for 98 bucks and was like, lol f*** yes. I wish I bought another one.

Buy a tarp to put under your tent, get extra pins/hooks as you'll likely bend or break a few and might need it for the tarp as well, also get a tent repair kit that are usually 20-30 bucks max. Just your simple starter stuff to have around.

The height is fine, if you're in your tent, its usually to lay down and relax with a book or just to sleep or you know, camping hanky panky. But dome height, I mean the bigger you go the more height you get, in our 8 person tent I can stand up fully and be fine, even in my 5 person tent I can some what stand up almost up straight to get dressed and get outside.

I also always prefer dome at night as the light fills better inside with a decent sized lamp.
