Big Buff Destroys Granlund (Wrist Surgery, Out For At Least a Month)

Granted it was from the Wild - Jets game on Saturday, not tonight's game but I think it deserves a thread now that Granlund is out for at least a month due to wrist surgery from the hit. Looks like he landed on his wrist the wrong way.

I guess the argument is if the hit was legal or not but to me it wasn't illegal. This is just a case of a big strong hockey player throwing a small player around like a rag doll.

It's like he slewfooted him without actually slewfooting him.

Just a case of a huge person being that much stronger than a smaller person. Too bad for Granlund, but that is the game.

Isn't this interference?

It looks like Buff's stick did most of the work... he gets caught between Buff and the stick along the boards... Pretty innocent play, bad result.

Im only looking at the Gif but when it changes camera angles it looks like its the defensemen who rimmed the puck around the boards and I can't see if granlund touches it or not. Id have to see the full play.

As a not-completely-sober Flames fan, I was initially very worried, then very confused, then very relieved as I realized the Flames played L.A. not Minnesota tonight and that Markus scored the game-winning-goal instead of getting destroyed by Byfuglien.

Looks bad for the Granlund the Elder though - hope the injury isn't too severe/long-term as I understand he hasn't had an outstanding campaign this season.

Since moving back to defence due to all the injuries, this has been the best hockey Buff has played in his career. I cannot imagine how low the Jets would be in the standings right now without the guy.

I don't like the hit. Buff extends too much. If it wasn't interference it would still be holding...essentially a clothesline as PBFan said.

I would make it a suspension. You can say it is just because Buff is big, but Granlund did absolutely nothing wrong, IMO, but was hurt, predictably (not predictably as to how exactly, but predictably), by the illegal actions of Buff.

I'm livid about this and I'm not a massive fan of Buff....but I'm not sure if is suspension worthy unless it was completely intentional. The puck was just getting pushed into the offensive zone and he was trying to push Granlund off of it as much as he could. You can't penalize someone for being that big and using their body as leverage. This is nothing new for Granlund either. His first year in the league Hal Gill threw him around like a rag doll too.

Imagine that, hey?

Byfuglien, who openly admitted hating the fact that he wasn't going to be moved back to Defense before the start of the season, looks comfortable and good on Defense since being put back there.

It's almost like he enjoys playing that position because he knows that's his strength.

To me it's not suspendable. It's interference, but not suspendable.

It is a hit that warrants a big response though. It's something that he should have had to fight for afterwards.

I wouldn't say it was legal... you're not allowed to reach out of your lane and obstruct a player like that. Interference was the correct call.

You're probably right. I was so busy analyzing the hit itself I didn't actually look to see that the puck was long gone.

Clothes line from hell!

On a serious note, it was an interference call and I'd say illegal hit.

I think you have to hold someone responsible for illegal actions that lead directly and predictably to injury. Malice intended or not, it is a reckless play. I might just make it one game, but would make it clear "you can't do that"...otherwise the message is "Granlund, you can't play here".

If Buff did the same thing without the proximity to the boards, I would be more inclined to think it was not suspendable given the same injury and result, even though still illegal, as it would not be near as dangerous and more towards accidental.

I know this was not a concussion, but when the class action suit is in full gear, this clip can be used to show what the NHL considers a nonsuspendable 2 minute penalty...

I don't think they'll look at something like this as suspendable considering it was only a minor penalty.

The major penalty for interference is discretionary and based on the "degree of violence" involved in the act. Personally I don't see this as a particularly violent incident, just a spectacular one because of the way Granlund's feet went up in the air.
