The owners lost me when they couldn't come up with anything even resembling incentives to get the players to sign.
The league needs a cap. But do they have to fill their offer with endless restrictions to how every contract is written (with no contract longer than 3 years being my personal favorite).
They owners wanted to immediately eliminate arbitration in the CBA, but they now they only want to power to eliminate arbitration after the ink dries. A big step forward.
They should have made an offer that had some of the dramatic impact of the PA's Dec. 14th proposal. Keep the cap the way they want it, but also add some sexy unexpected pro-player incentives. If they had made a proposal that overall sounded pretty good to the majority of players, PA could have seen the offer as compromise rather then a capitulation and a chance to play hockey this season.
