Some quick Excel work... should be interesting to some..

Best goal differential by period:

1st period:

PHILADELPHIA: +11

Worst: Buf -29, Fla -19, Car -14, Edm -12

2nd period:
ST LOUIS: +17
CAROLINA: +13
ANAHEIM: +12
CHICAGO: +12
VANCOUVER: +12

CHICAGO: +14
BOSTON: +13
PITTSBURGH: +11

Worst: NYI -18, Cal -12, Phi -10, Det -10, Tor -10

Some points:
- Top 5 in overall goal diff: ST LOUIS, SAN JOSE, CHICAGO, PITTSBURGH, ANAHEIM
- No surprise that Chicago is dominant all the way thru a game...
- Pittsburgh also very balanced: +10, +8, +11
- San Jose is an awesome +27 in the 1st, then +2,-2.
- Vancouver notorious for weak seconds is top 5 this yr. : -1 last yr, -6 the yr before.. and +8 the yr before when they were +28 in the 1st and +42 in the 3rd.
- Carolina is Schizo: -14, +13, -9
- Detroit falls off a cliff: +11, +2, -10
- Phoenix wears you down: -11, +5, +10
- St. Louis are slow starters: +1, +17, +18
- Dallas the most neutral?: 0, -1, -1

And a tonne of variation throughout...

i think that LA best is always 3rd period... but that 17 game without goal in 1st did make that difference...

btw: what is LA record in second?

- Carolina is Schizo: -14, +13, -9

This has been noted by Canes fans, but I haven't seen the numbers to back it up. Thanks for putting them together!

I have no idea why they perform this way, but it's true that they tend to **** the bed early in the game, rebound for a strong middle, and then hold on for dear life at the end. Very strange team.

+16, -5, +11

I think they have the next largest drop from the 1st to the 2nd of the top teams... next to San Jose's drop from +27 to +2.

I betcha Flames are solid in the 1st period but horrendous in the 3rd

They are -10, 1, -12

They are basically just as 'horrendous' in the 1st as the 3rd... But they play teams even in the middle frame - so relatively speaking their 2nd periods are solid.

If you look at actual goals...
They've scored 19 in the first, 30 in the 2nd and 31 in the 3rd... They just happen to also get slapped by the opposition in the 3rd - have given up 43 - most in the league.
