1. Zdeno Chara
2. Peter Stastny
3. Marian Hossa

Palffy and Bondra
both finished the #4 best NHL Slovakian poll tied with 34.2% of the vote. This is a one day runoff for #4.

(W) Peter Bondra (1990-2007)

Career: 892 pts in 1081 gp
Best season: 80 pts in 67 gp

(W) Ziggy Palffy (1994-2006)
Career: 713 pts in 684 gp
Best season: 89 pts in 73 gp

Bondra was a pretty elite goal scorer. He won the rocket in 97-98 with 52 goals. But here's the kicker...he did that in 67 games. He was on a 64 goal pace!

Between 1995-1998 Bondra (141) was 2nd in goals in the league behind only john Leclair (143), however, Leclair had played 234 games and Bondra only 211 games.

Also, from the 1994/95 season until 1998/99 season (that's 5 seasons) he was second In the league in goals/game with .67 g/gp behind only Mario Lemeiux.

From 94-97 he had a pretty weak offensive team (much like palffy with the islanders and Lak), altho in 97-99 he had Adam oates.

On the Other hand, Palffy was Definitely one of the most underrated players of the past 30 years. Consistently over point/game during the dead puck era.

Between 1995 (his first full nhl season) and 2006 (his retirement) he was 10th in the entire NHL in points and 10th in the NHL in points/game (1.08) just behind gretzky (1.12), Lindros (1.11), Kariya (1.09) and just ahead of Bure (1.06), Selanne (1.04) and Sundin (1.00).

he was 7th in goals/gm for players who had at least 82 gp. Just ahead of Heatley, Selanne, Lindros and Sundin.

Put these stats up on largely bad teams. He was the only player to score over pt/gm in a season his 4 years on the islanders, and in LA for 4 years it was pretty much the same outside of an end of career Luc Robitaille.

If Palffy had stayed healthy and gotten to play on either a good team or with a good centerman, the outlook on him could be much different today.

Bondra finished with two 50+ goal seasons and two 40+ goal seasons.

Palffy hit 40+ three times.

Bondra was at or over pt/gm 4 times.

Palffy was at or over pt/gm 9 times.

If you ever saw them play this is not a debate. Bondra was fed by Oates for a lot of years and was a one trick pony (though a damn good one). Ziggy carried the Islanders on his back and scored with no help until they got Reichel for a short time.

Bondra's most productive period was before Oates joined Washington. it was a 35+ year old Oates, which while still decent, was no where near his earlier numbers, but again, Bondras best period was before Oates arrived.

Palffy got to play with an aging Robitaille too, but again BOTH players didn't play with much talent during their careers.

As for Bondra being a 1 trick pony, he can be a 1 trick pony all he wants as he scored goals at a better rate than elite guys like Pavel Bure, Teemu Selanne, Eric Lindros etc, over the 5 year stretch of 94-98, only trailing Mario Lemeiux. During the dead puck era, if you can score goals, you are uber important.

(I voted Palffy due to his abundance of seasons over pt/gm, but Bondra was definitely one of the best goal scorers of his era, similar to Bure)

Yeah, he had another C on Washington but my memory is fuzzy. As I said Bondra was a damn good goal scorer but Ziggy was that and more.

He had Pivonka and Joe Juneau during his best period, which is certainly nothing to write home about. In fact, in 96-97, Bondra scored 46 goals and 77 points in 77 games. The player second in points on that team that year? Dale Hunter w 46 points! Gross.

During Palffy's best stretch of goal seasons, 3 years from 95-98, he had Jason Allison (close to pt/gm during this period) and Robert Reichel. Again, nothing to write home about for someone to play with.

Both players are probably under-appreciated due to circumstance. Imagine if they had gotten to play their entire careers with someone like prime Backstrom or Sakic or Thornton.

It's always a shame, those guys stranded in the wilderness all alone :)
