I'm trying to come up with a the best rosters from every team over the history of the NHL and I would like some input from some 'experts' like yourselves.

If you feel that a player needs to be added/removed then please make a reply to this post.

PS (the criteria for a player to be on a certain team is that they must play the most games for that team compared to any other team they played for)

That's high praise for Pitkanen to put him up there already.

The Flyers have never had much in the way of stud defenseman other than Howe and Desjardins. I'll be very surprised if Pitkanen doesn't win the Flyers first Norris trophy, and finish as th ebest defenseman in Flyers history.

are you going by talent alone, or value to the organization?

If Pitkanen was traded tomorrow, I don't think I would put him in such a high class just yet

Your Imagination
Is this considering entire careers or just the player's career on a team? Example.....Terry Sawchuk or Jacques Plante. Could they be considered for Boston because they played there a season or two or not considered because they enjoyed the majority of their success elsewhere.

If asked which way you'd pick, I'd have bet heavily that you would take Jim W over Joe. That's surprisng to me. I always thought Jim was easily superior. Well, you saw them more than I did.

Very close. Jimmy appeared to be the better skater/passer etc. but Joe actually put up more points, and was more physical. He also had a longer career.

Flip a coin.

Much as I like Plante, I think I would put either Dryden or Durnan ahead of him. But other than that hair-splitting this is pretty close. You could also make the case for Chelios over Johnson.

I question the strength of the league at the time of Durnan's dominance, at least enough to place him behind Plante and Dryden. He wasn't great, but the numbers are a bit elevated, I think. In terms of that #6 d-man, I'd go with Butch Bouchard (with the same caveats as Durnan) or J.C. Tremblay.

Here's my team. I start in the early 50's. I figure that there has to be a starting point and the game changed so much from era to era that I don't want to compare Morenz to Cournoyer. I know Lach and Cleghorn and Joliat also get left out, but the team'll be ok.

I'd roll these 4 lines.

Boom Boom Geoffrion- Beliveau- Naslund
Rocket Richard-Henri Richard-Dickie Moore
Lafleur-Lemaire-Shutt
Cournoyer-Pete Mahovlich-Bob Gainey

I picked Naslund so I wouldn't get called a xenophobic Canadian homer. Gilles Tremblay,Claude Provost,Bert Olmstead, even Stephane Richer could be a credible choice on this team. Hell, put Elmer Lach up there, why not Ralph Backstrom,Saku Koivu, Bobby Rousseau,Floyd Curry,Carbo ?

On D. Savard-Robinson
Lapointe-Laperriere
Harvey-Chelios
JC Tremblay could easily join that group. The other 50's d men like Johnson and co. are tough to evaluate due to Harvey's dominance. Bouchard and Tremblay would make a pretty nice mixture of skill and toughness though.

IN nets, Patrick Roy,Dryden and Plante, I'd just take a bribe, I couldn't pick 1 or 2 and think I was right, there are just too many arguements that make sense for each one of them. Hell give me Roy. Dryden and Plante's interviews would run too long.

I'd let Toe Blake coach because Scotty would never take the job if Toe was available.

Roger Doucet could sing the anthems.

Claude Mouton would do the pa.

Danny Gallivan on play by play with Irvin in the booth.

Redden-York
Duchesne-Volchenkov

These have the benefit of (except for Duchesne and Volchenkov) being actual lines and defence pairings over extended periods. The ranking is by line not by individual players. Tough they are lines I think these are the best 12 Sens forwards and 6 D-Men. Apologies to the great early Captain Cunneyworth who is my pick as 13 forward. Van Allen, Leshychyn, Kravchuk, Juneau, Neil, Tugnutt, Rhodes, White, MacIver, Smolinski all deserve HM.

For a new expansion team with a 13 year history that is 4 pretty good lines and 2 great Defence pairings.

You guys are amazing!
This is exactly what I'm looking for!

To clarify, for a player to be on a team, he must have played the majority of his career on a certain team.
For instance, Jason Arnott played 302 games for New Jersey and 286 games for Edmonton. Therefore, he would be considered New Jersey's property.

However, a guy like Petr Klima played more games for Detroit than for Edmonton, but because he wouldn't make Detroit's 20 man roster, he would make Edmonton's roster.

The debate throughout the ages will never go away. I think the arguments that you guys make are extremely valid.

I'm going to upload the unpolished rosters that I have so far. It is a Microsoft Excel file so I hope you can open it. Each worksheet is a different team.

Plante is one of the best goalie EVER. Dryden isn't as good and talented.

EDIT: Nevermind, just saw that they have to have played most games for the team.

Quick and dirty for the Sabres (some guys like LaFontaine, Hawerchuk, and Horton don't qualify per games played rule):

(lines sort of by era)
Rene Roberts - Gilbert Perreault - Rick Martin
Dave Andreychuk - Pierre Turgeon - Alexander Mogilny
Don Luce - Craig Ramsay - Danny Gare
Miroslav Satan - Daniel Briere - Rob Ray
hon. mention Mike Foligno

Phil Housley - Mike Ramsey
Jim Schoenfeld - Alexei Zhitnik
Larry Playfair - Lindy Ruff
hon. mention Richard Smehlik???

Dominik Hasek
Roger Crozier (technically played more games in Detroit)
if not Crozier: Don Edwards? Martin Biron? Daren Puppa?

I think the best way to go about it is that a player is only worth his value at that particular time for the team. Basically, it has to be a player who is readily identified with the team, no matter how long he was there. Otherwise there's some problems. The LA Kings are probably defined by Wayne Gretzky more than any other player, but they wouldn't have his "rights" in this contest because he played more games for Edmonton. There's guys out there like Messier, Belfour, Roy, and MacInnis who should rightfully belong to two teams because they accomplished so much with both. But I understand your concern if something like Bourque and Lafleur end up in Colorado/Quebec. I guess what I'm saying is that there should be no strict rule on it, just common sense
