let's think about the OP here though

exactly what position does a FORWARD need to reliably and routinely poke check?

Uh, every single board battle? When opposing forwards are crossing a blue-line? Anytime in the defensive zone?

lol a player routinely poke checking in those scenarios is not doing what they should be or want to be.

I think you're over thinking the term 'pokecheck'. Its not an exclusive time consuming move players need to power up for.

I don't know if it counts as a poke check, but the stick positioning of Jaccob Slavin to neutralize scoring chances out of nowhere is very impressive.

Lidstrom could probably still play in a bottom pairing due to his poke checks, passes and positioning alone.
