I find that overall rating is not always an indicator that prospects are NHL ready. Usually the thing holding them back is their physical stats. I'll always check a players individual attributes to figure out if I can use him- If a player is in the rated in the high 60's or early 70's, but has a decnt all round game, then I've started to play them.

Typical example - Monahan in Calgary is a little slow at just 80 speed/acceleration but has a decent enough all-round to switch between my 2nd-3rd lines and not look out of place.

just drafted a guy in 2018. hes an enforcer defenseman, and I spotted him in the prospect game stats as a 83 overall. had to give alot to get him as he was projected 1st overall but his individual stats are insane. 90 speed, 93 agility, 95 bodychecking, 98 fighting skill, 95 defensive awareness, 99 slapshot power. unbeatable in a fight

also I didnt draft him, but I traded for Oliver Bjorkstrand from CBJ. didnt pay much to acquire him, just needed a hole filled on the RW. after 1 year on the 2RW spot he became 85OVR with 99 wrist power, 99 wrist accuracy and 99 defensive awareness. pretty awesome. absolute dynamite on the PK and gets tons of shorties

Drafted some guy named Bob Duffy 1st overall. He was 20 years old and had a 83 rating. Now he's 22 and a 88 rating.
Btw what do you look at in the draft? Potential or league interest?

I always look at potential. I don't care what the other teams think of him.

First season for me I had the 6, 7, and 10th overall picks. I needed a goalie and there was a good one available slated to go top 5. I packaged 7 and 10 for number one and the goalie (A. Nedeljovik) was 5 stars green

I had a 5 green star skater that I drafted in '13. He was like 84 out of the gate too. Second season he was 95 overall and literally good at everything. 5 stars in every category. The only thing that wasn't amazing was faceoffs(60) because they decided you can't get better at faceoffs.

Is that true for any 4* or better prospect at a young age or just guys who were just drafted?

Traded for this guy, but knew he would be a stud. Joey Galvin 84 overall TWF RW 4 1/2 gold stars on draft day (2025). By 2027 he is 88 overall and still 4 1/2 stars. 93 def awareness, 89 off awareness, 88 speed, shooting all in mid to upper 80s.

how is it that a lot of you have leagues where the players progress so quickly?! You have players being drafted in the 70's?! I never get that. I have played several gm modes and I always get players in the 50's and 60's and it takes them 4, 5, even 6 years just to crack the NHL let alone be a contributor.

So how is it that I see a lot you have leagues where players are drafted in the high 60's low 70's and by the end of their first or second year they reach the low to high 80's?! Is there a tuner I can adjust or something?

I dont know if this matters but I play on Xbox360 so maybe the different consoles play a factor?

You just need to scout better and draft better, or play beyond the first couple of years of BeAGM where the computer starts to generate the prospects. The draft is filled with players ranging between 60s-80s (depending on the strength of the draft). I usually consider a particular draft pick bad on my part if he's not at least in the high 60s because it will take him that much longer for him to be an effective NHL player.

Here's a good tip for finding diamonds in the rough:

After the prospects game, go to GM Options>Scouting>Prospect Game Stats. Once you are in the stats screen look at the top of the screen where his name is listed, and it will show his overall. You can do this with every player who played in the prospects game, but you won't be able to look at his individual stats.

Also, make a note on your phone of the players who are 70+ overall, and then check the draft rankings to see where those players are projected.

I haven't touched nhl 14 in a while, but from what I remember:

Alan Gunderson, top 5 pick I believe sometime 2015-2017, was drafted and pre-season 80 overall, next year jumped to 88, then next season 91 and stood around that level.
Good centre, two-way forward.

Another great pick up was Tanarsky (forgot his first name).
Top 10 pick I believe a year or two before Gunderson, I think he was a 76-80 overall pre-season then jumped to 87 the next.
Sophomore season he posted 70+ assists, he's a left winger, put him on a line with Bobby Ryan and those two went ham that season.

I traded Enstrom, Burmistrov and other guy for Lucic and a 1st on my Jets Be a GM.

The Bruins struggled and I got the 6th pick and Ekblad was there:yo:

Then i traded Evander Kane to Ottawa for two 1sts and Gryba(man is a mountain in the d-zone) and they are last in the league. McDavid?
