Pilote won 3 Norris trophies, finished 2nd another 3 times.

He was a 5x 1st team All Star, 3x 2nd team.

In the 1960-61 playoffs he tied for the most point in both series, and was tied for the most points in the playoffs.

It's hard to overlook Stevens' playoff resume, but Pilote won three Norris trophies, and was runner-up three more times. Stevens never won a Norris and was only runner-up twice. There are probably some era adjustment you'd need to make to that (competition was tougher in Stevens era), but that's a massive difference. Pilote very likely would have won the Conn Smythe had it existed in 1961.

For a number of years Pilote was the indisputable best dman in the NHL. I'm not sure if Stevens was ever considered a top 3 for a significant time span.

1) Stevens shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Pilote.

2) None of Stevens best seasons came wearing #3.
