*note these are only stating late round picks

Overall Analysis -) So many great talented forwards. There drafting abilities in the late round lead to multiple successful teams, to many cup finals. Datsyuk was phenomenal in a class of his own. Zetterberg hit 92 points in his prime overall an amazing player. Holmstrom, Franzen, Filppula, Kozlov, Nyquist, Knuble all spent time in top 6s. Darren Helm, is a great bottom sixer. Athanisou and Janmark are on their way to top 6 forwards. Jason York was a Solid defender, and as is Ericsson. Quincey was decent. Osgood was a legitimate number 1, Mrazek is a decent 1b type, Maracle was an okay backup.

You could make a pretty impressive team only using 3rd and onwards with the wings.

This forward core is pretty sick

Kozlov - Datsyuk - Knuble
Holmstrom - Zetterberg - Franzen
Athanisiou - Filppula - Nyquist
Helm - Andersson - Janmark
Pulkinnen - Quine - Nestrasil
Laing - Sykora - Ritola
Mursak - Callahan - McDonnell
all logged games...

decent defence w/ Jason York, Jonathan Ericsson , Dan Mcgillis, Kyle Quincey, Derek Meech, Nick Jensen, Alexei Marchenko, John Jakopin, Stewart Malgunas

with Osgood, Mrazek, Maracle, and Mcintyre in net
-------------------------------------

Understandable if no team beats it. I'm looking to see other impressive draft teams.
No need, to do a big analysis like above. Also don't worry about being bias and posting your own teams, I'm quite interested learning about most teams, and how successful, they've been in the later rounds. I'm assuming teams who've drafted well late lead to team success. Like I stated above, Detroit won 4 stanley cups, and made the finals 6 times throughout this time frame, and most of their core players were drafted in the later rounds.

Detroit covered more ground in Europe than any NHL team for awhile. I believe they were the only team that had even seen Datsyuk play prior to the 98 Draft. They had a really great run up until the lockout, the big players on their 08 Cup team conisisted of all later round guys. Really was pretty crazy what they did until the rest of the league took notice and caught up with European scouting.

Yzerman has done a good job with players drafted outside of the 1st round so far for Tampa. Nashville also has a pretty impressive track record outside of the 1st round in the last ~15 years.

Don’t think anybody is going to beat Detroit. Dallas has gotten a few quality players past the first two rounds.

Elite Talent - Jamie Benn, John Klingberg

Top 6/Top 4 - Reilly Smith, Jussi Jokinen, Trevor Daley, Esa Lindell

Starters - Marty Turco, Mike Smith

NHL Regulars (over 300 games) - Jon Sim, Brett McLean, Niko Kapanen, Anttii Miettinen

1994: Eric Boulton (9th), Kim Johnsson (11th)
1995: Marc Savard (4th)
1997: Mike York (6th), Mike Mottau (7th)
2000: Dominic Moore (3rd), Henrik Lundqvist (7th)
2001: Marek Zidlicky (6th)
2002: Petr Prucha (8th)
2004: Ryan Callahan (4th)
2005: Tom Pyatt (4th)

2008: Dale Weise (4th)
2010: Jesper Fast (6th)
2013: Pavel Buchnevich (3rd), Anthony Duclair (3rd)

All of these players have played 300 or more NHL games except Fast (287), Buchnevich (115) and Duclair (213), but they are all pretty much locks to hit 300.

I could imagine it was like seeing Podkolzin WJSS show first time live and nobody else won't see him before the draft.

Detroit certainly got to live off of drafting where others did not.

If the start date is 2000 onward, I am sure other teams would be comparable.

Most teams don't have the same scouting staffs for going on 30-years. This would probably be more relevant to look at the past decade rather than results going back farther than from which there are still active players. Regardless of how well Detroit drafted two and a half decades ago, it doesn't really tell anything about the competencies of today's regimes. But by all means, if a post was needed to pat Detroit of yester-year on the back, it's completely understandable given the state of that franchise currently. Fans probably need something to cling to, and I suppose this is as good as any.

San Jose has been pretty good:

1994 - Nabokov
1995 - Kipper
1998 - Samuelsson
1999 - Murray
2001 - Ehrhoff, Clowe
2003 - Pavelski
2004 - Greiss, Mitchell
2007 - Bonino, Braun
2008 - Wingels, Demers

*edit - not quite as good as I thought, as they hit on a lot of 2nd rounders.

The Isles in this century:

2002 - C Frans Nielsen
2003 - D Bruno Gervais
2004 - D Chris Campoli
2006 - D Andrew MacDonald
2008 - F Matt Martin, D Jared Spurgeon
2009 - F Casey Cizikas, F Anders Lee
2012 - D Adam Pelech
2013 - F Alan Quine
2017 - D Sebastian Aho

I must say, this is a truly miserable turnout - and I'm talking whatsoever, much less for a team that had as many picks as the Isles have had this century.

Lee, Spurgeon, and Nielsen are the only real players of not, one of whom never played a game for the Isles.

Cizikas, Lee, Martin, Pelech, and Aho are still with the organization.

Later rounders of slight note in the 90s include:
F Andreas Johansson (1991), F Derek Armstrong (1992), D Darren Van Impe (1993), Ds Jason Strudwick, Brad Lukowich, & Dick Tarnstrom (1994), F Vladimir Orszagh (1995), D Zdeno Chara (1996), then F Matthias Weinhandl, F Juraj Kolnik, & D Radek Martinek (1999).

Zdeno Chara was ultimately quite the find, but also really the only true player of note here.

Looking at these two lists, it's no surprise that the Isles have spent the better part of the last 28 years being relative afterthoughts for the playoffs.

The seventh round draft pick for Detroit this year Otto Kivenmaki, a small(5'8") but skilled and fast centerman from Finland, was just named on a top line(as well as 2nd power play line) for his team, Assat, in top tier league in Finland and has done well. He impressed in the Redwings developmental camp last June and has consistently been productive for Finland at the U17 and U18 level. He is looking like a good candidate to be one of Detroit's late round gems.
