I think 2018 was good but not great, I remember last year I was really looking forward to stuff like Roma, First Man, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs etc and they were all pretty disappointing to me. Most of the other Oscars nominees were just fine I thought but nothing too special, I think maybe The Favourite could have made my list at #10 but I wanted Peter Jackson's excellent WWI documentary in there. Also, there are a bunch of 2018 titles which will be in my 2019 list because of Belgian release dates, Shoplifters for example.

1. Angel (Mortier, Belgium)
2. Climax (Noé, France)
3. Hold the Dark (Saulnier, US)
4. Burning (Lee, South Korea)
5. Zoe (Doremus, US)
6. Annihilation (Garland, UK)
7. Cold War (Pawlikowski, Poland)
8. Leave no Trace (Granik, US)
9. Hearts Beat Loud (Haley, US)
10. They Shall Not Grow Old (Jackson, UK)

HM: Mirage (Paulo, Spain); Capharnaüm (Labaki, Lebanon); Mandy (Cosmatos, US); Sophia Antipolis (Vernier, France)

Cold War and Shoplifters are clear favourites, but the third choice is hard. I ended with Eighth Grade, but it is on the same level as Widows, The Favourite and Can You Ever Forgive Me?

I have not seen Roma yet, so I may come back to change my vote.

Voted for Burning, Cold War and Eighth Grade. There were at least another half-dozen films that were up there too but those three stand out to me. 2018 was a pretty good year.

As of the time I voted, Burning was in the lead. Can't say I expected that.

Burning is definitely my favorite of the year. I can't say I've seen a movie quite like it, it just has such a unique tone and it's one of those movies you can't put in a box in terms of genre. Honorable mentions to Annihilation and Hereditary. Two of the best sci fi and horror movies of the decade.

Also HM to First Reformed. I still have problems with the ending and some of the heavy-handed commentary, but I STILL think about that movie a lot.

I think this is one of the weaker years in terms of best picture nominees. The Favourite is at the top for me but I still think it's Lanthimos' weakest effort by a long shot. Roma really hasn't stuck with me. I appreciate it on a technical level though of course. Burning, Shoplifters, Climax (if that counts as 2018) and The Guilty stuck out more to me for foreign films. I still have to see Cold War as well, which I have a feeling I'll like.

Some recommendations for 2019: The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, I lost My Body

I thought 2018 started slow but more decent films came out in the last quarter to finish ok, There were many good quirky films, films that might not make anyone's top 10, but were enjoyable. I like quirky. Hotel Artemis, Mid90s, Bad Times at the El Royale, Sorry to Bother You, Juliet Naked, The Endless, Searching, Hold your Breath, Border, The Guilty, Western, Aniara. Kore-eda's The Third Murder can be looked at as 2017 or 2018, it hit the film festivals in 2017 but wasn't released commercially in theatres in many places outside Japan until 2018 (it wasn't in the 2017 list here so I'll mention it now). Upgrade should be seen alongside Venom.

Couldn't agree more. All of the films I thought would be good were disappointing, leaving me with no good films to vote for (again, haven't seen much overall, only 2 of the films you listed, and 12 of the films in the poll).

So, my "best" films for 2018 would be:

1) Under the Silver Lake
2) Hereditary
3) The Land of Steady Habits
4) Suspiria
5) Black Panther
6) Annihilation

That's very poor, not a single one over 7/10.

Forgot about Under the Silver Lake, I loved that. It's one of those movies that takes a lot of chances but it basically all worked for me.

1. The Favorite (8/10)
2. Roma (8/10)
3. Isle of Dogs (8/10)

Pretty tight at the top, nothing quite reaching into all decade territory but a solid enough selection.

Unfortunately haven’t seen Roma yet. Very happy to see Annihilation getting some love. I saw it three times in theaters. Absolutely loved it
