NHL Rank, even strength goal differential per game 2020-21

1. NJ Devils +0.92
2. Tampa Bay +0.88
3. Carolina +0.76
4. Vegas +0.69
5. Toronto +0.65
6. St. Louis +0.63
7. Montreal +0.59
8. Florida +0.53
9. Winnipeg +0.50
10. Minnesota +0.47
11. Philadelphia +0.47
12. Boston +0.38
...
26. Anaheim -0.47
27. Vancouver -0.50
28. San Jose -0.53
29. Detroit -0.60
30. Buffalo -1.00
31. Ottawa -1.15

Someone make sense of this for me. Most of this list is in an expected order. What is going on at #1? Is this just a fluky thing, or is New Jersey this good (and their special teams that bad)?

(small sample sizes I know)

New Jersey's Penalty kill is historically bad, and there PP is bottom half.

well their special teams do stink. Maybe they are legit at 5 on 5. Where do you get these stats form?

NJ is pretty good on the 5 on 5. We're pretty average by most advanced metrics, but when you factor in some of our best even strength players haven't played and we have one of the best and hottest goalies in the league it adds up.

Yep. Having an almost .950 5v5 save Percentage helps. By far the best 5v5 goaltending in the league.

This and it’s still a relatively small sample size for NJ. I figure special teams and even strength will both even out a bit.

But but but the noth division suppose to be weak...

LOL swing and a miss.

You notice how directionally in every stat where there's a team at the top there's a counterpart team at the bottom from the same division. It's almost as if the divisions are only playing each other and these stats are mostly a zero sum affair.

The fact that you (a) aren't taking that into account (b) thought that somehow the list of teams said anything that supported your post and (c) posted in a condescending sarcastic QED fashion is straight up hilarious.

Lol I see 3 teams in the top 9 and 2 teams in the bottom 6. At least we can say the West is the weakest so far 5 on 5 followed by the East.

Lol you still don’t understand, this stat is meaningless for comparing divisions. 5v5 scoring will always 0 out by division.
And that's fine, but if there are more 'good' teams than 'bad', you cannot call the division weak.

This stat has zero correlation to being a good team or a bad team league wide, it simply shows who has done better at 5v5 play within a division, realistically this list should have been separated out by each division but even then it is pretty much pointless.

If I made a 5th division of all AHL teams, do you think there would be teams with good records (and therefore good stats) in it if they only played each other? Would it be the weakest division?

I'm a little afraid for you that you don't understand this.

Unless you they playing across divisions you can't tell weak from strong divisions. All you can do is estimate based on metrics like these.

I'm amazed at how each one of your posts demonstrates even less understanding of mathematics and logical deduction than the last. I guess sometimes I forget I can be talking to 10 year olds here.
