Best and Worst Free Agent Signings in Arizona History

In early June 2011, Don Maloney, Arizona Coyotes general manager at the time traded RFA Ilya Bryzgalov’s rights to the Philadelphia Flyers. In doing so Maloney and the Coyotes knew they would be shopping for a new starting netminder over the off-season. On July 1st, the opening day of Free Agency, Arizona signed goaltender Mike Smith to a two-year, $4 million dollar deal.

Petr Nedved is up there. The reason being that we hurriedly, sloppily, and needlessly traded Daymond Langkow for Saprykin and Gauthier in order to make room for Nedved, who was a complete flop. Langkow, of course, had a fantastic career.

The obviously there’s Ribeiro.

Tony Amonte was hugely disappointing.

EDIT: Grabner is a strange pick. He was great. Don’t agree with that at all.

Don't forget about Tocchet....and what about Cliff Ronning and Greg Adams.

Silly to include Grabner which was due to injury and a great signing prior to his injury.

Got me going down memory lane.....let's not forget about Mike Gartner....somewhere I have an unopened envelope celebrating his 700th career goal.

Grabner was amazing before he took that high stick to the eye. He was a victim of the covid salary cap constraints. Nothing more.

On paper I think the Amonte deal is the worst, but we cut bait quickly and limited the damage. Ribeiro hurt for years because of the way we handled it.

Vrbata coming back at the end of his career for 55pts after some mediocre seasons in Vancouver was a great pickup. Jovo shouldn't be counted out either, about half a point per, veteran presence on a team trying to turn into a playoff team. He certainly had his ups and downs but it woulda been a lot harder for some of the younger guys coming up without him. IMO neither match Whitney and Smith but good sleepers.

Including Grabner in your list indicates a lack of doing the reading.
