I'd like to edit my list here to include this little gem that I found:

It's entirely recorded from a Whirlpool washing machine. I don't know where exactly it will rank, I need to listen to it a few times, but this baby's making the top-15 for sure.

I want to revisit this and add some new recommendations.

I just heard Infest the Rats' Nest (2019) and it is so weird - like Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and Amebix had a baby. It's really good and deserved a vote.

Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi (2020) - I honestly do not know why I keep playing this album, but I've listened to it at least five times since January. Is progressive psychadelic black metal a thing? Because if it is, this is it.

Havukruunu - Uinuos syömein sota (2020) - This is happy-sounding epic black metal with an atmospheric edge.

Ulcerate - Stare Into Death and Be Still (2020) - Ulcerate really lean into the dissonant side of technical death metal and do it well. This album really fits that aesthetic well, with a bleak, heavy, and oddly soothing (as soothing as tech death can get) album.

Spell - For None and All (2016) and Opulent Decay (2020) - It's the return of the seventies here. Spell play a heavy rocking style reminiscent of early Rush with the prog elements stripped and a riffier guitarist added.

Briton Rites - Occulte Fantastique (2020) - The website explicitly states that this is Black Sabbath by way of Witchfinder General. I think it's more nuanced than that. This album is heavy, gradually slowing down as the songs progress, with monstrous riffs and tone.

I would have believed that coming from a lot of people, true. I just don't believe you don't know John Zorn!

(edit: Merzbow, Mr. Bungle... nah, you're pulling my leg)
John Zorn (born September 2, 1953) is an American composer, conductor, saxophonist, arranger and producer who "deliberately resists category".

Uhhuh.

Not sure what you mean by this. Zorn is famous for leading the NY avant-garde scene, but is also recognized as one of the leading figure of contemporary klezmer music, and he has a Christmas album. I have 6 (!) Zorn albums in that 2020 list, you could relate the first three together and recognize a signature, but couldn't possibly equate them with anything on the last two.

The "deliberately resists category" bit is what stood out. I wouldn't have thought that possible. Also I don't know what klezmer music is.

Not a big Idris Ackamoor ☥ The Pyramids fan?

My Best-Carey
I guess this was for me. I like it, but there's an easy-listening swing to it that's just not really my style. It should have a + next to it.

edit: I was sure I skipped over it and didn't include it... I admit it's a little too low!

I was just kidding. The other poster and I are not familiar with a lot of artists on your list. And what is that thing in the middle of their name? Is that the Greek physics symbol for angular displacement or something?:)

Oh I thought you were a fan (it's a much respected album and my 3/10 really is a hot take), and you made me go back and re-listen to it!
I'll stand by my comment, Eternity is a very nice piece, but the rest of the album is way too mellow and common for me. It still should be a little higher, maybe a 4.5/10.
