Knowing them and liking them, even a lot, still shouldn't necessarily translate to them being your favorites or that everyone of their albums has to be your favorite for that particular year.

From 1965 to 1970, I managed to keep 'em away from the #1 spot twice. I had them fourth in 1966, and second (to a Lennon album) in 1970. The earlier records wouldn't do as good with me, but for the years we covered, I often couldn't see much of an argument for most of the contenders - and I have a lot of contenders :)

Somehow missed At Folsom Prison, would've voted for that as well. Great album and the extended version features some great performances by Carl Perkins.

I go back and forth on this one, as there are two albums that are fundamental to my love for music. Two albums that go back to when I used to sit at my dad's crappy old Yamaha turntable and spin staticy, horribly-over-scratched versions of both records. But for my favourite on the year, I'll go with Music from the Big Pink. The Band is a band (hyuck) which I still don't think gets its due or respect as a musical force. They were the very best of the Roots/Folk combination (at least if you exclude Neil Young from the reckoning), and I've always deeply appreciated this album. I have multiple copies of it in my own collection, for goodness sakes. It's the very definition of a classic.

1. The Band - Music from the Big Pink
2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
3. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

4. The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
5. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
6. John Coltrane - Om
7. The Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord

8. Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul
9. The Beatles - The White Album
10. Buffalo Springfield - Last Time Around
