I mentioned FS 1 is not doing any racing today. Are you saying that whatever non-horse racing sport is airing today could be canceled?
that may have been the original plan.... but due to mother nature Saturday is now open for FS1..... there is no XFINITY race due to Fox having to turn around the TV Truck from Charlotte to Bristol because of weather (which moved the XFINITY Race to Monday night.... ) that's why they raced Thursday night instead of Wednesday)

^ That could increase the audience for Churchill's card if people only get TVG or FS1. Right now, Churchill is on TVG2 and FS2 only. No TVG, FS1 or NBCSN.

  • Bob Baffert is about $175,000 away from earning $300,000,000 million in his career. Only two trainers have reached that mark. He has not had a starter since May 25.
  • Bill Mott remains five wins away from 5,000. He is the 7th winningest trainer all-time.
  • The Ohio Derby was added as a Kentucky Derby prep race. Full updated list in post #2.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Opening day: Today began the new meet which is scheduled to run until August 22. Laurel has been dark since March 15.
  • Handle: The track recorded a shade under $4,000,000.
  • Race 9: A 45-to-1 shot paid $97.80 topped a $1 super that paid over $25,000. The $.50 tri was a hair under $4,500.
  • Race 2: Won by 18-year-old trainer Anthony Lynch who is son to Cathal Lynch who is from Northern Ireland but had been based in Philadelphia for many years prior to relocating to Maryland in 2016. The son won for the first time with his 8th starter lifetime. It was the first turf race of the meet. Laurel has a good turf course.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

  • Bobby Raymond, who entered today 5-for-123 in 2020, won with both his starters and both ridden by former jockeys once based in Massachusetts (Ademar Santos and Augusto Marin). He has been training since the 1970s and raced in his earliest days at some of the now defunct New England tracks most prominently Suffolk Downs (MA) and Rockingham Park (NH).
  • Race 6: Michael Campbell was the winning conditioner. Another long time trainer who started in the 1970s but he came from a remote area in northern Wisconsin and graduated from Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He trained at midwest tracks mostly, Ohio but more so Illinois.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Races 6 and 7: Miguel Vasquez and Daniel Pita teamed to win consecutive races. The trainer had eight wins since the start of 2018.
  • Race 8: A fantastic finish. There is the old adage "grays on turf" and it was on display here.

  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 3 paid $1,941.
  • Race 10: Sunsation (Joe Bravo/Kelsey Danner) wired the field at 55-to-1 and the longest shot on the board. The winner paid $112.20. Forget what I said in yesterday's review about bombs wiring the field: IT DOES HAPPEN EVERY DAY!

  • Race 11: Atakan (Leo Reyes/Murat Sancal) wired the field in the finale at 52-to-1 and paid $105.60. The rider was a switch from Joe Bravo who rode the winner in the previous race. The $2 exacta paid $1,274. The $.50 tri paid over $2.300. The $.10 super paid over $4,800. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $1,300. The $50 Pick 5 paid over $109,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $140,000. The $2 double paid $1,441. There was about $2,000,000 bet into this race. Forget what I said in yesterday's review: that is three times in two days big bombs wired the field including back-to-back

Saturday, May 30, 2020 (part 2)

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Handle: $16.7 million including roughly $4,000,000 bet in the finale. Churchill had another good card today.
  • Race 11: Secret Message (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) finished brilliantly at 25-to-1 and won the $100,000 Grade 3 Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes. The place horse was sent off at 21-to-1. The $.10 super was $11,000. The payout of the day was the $.50 Pick 5 which paid over $131,000.

  • Race 10: John Velazquez won the first of consecutive races.
  • Race 8: The $.50 Pick 3 was over $2,400. The $.50 Pick 4 paid a massive $45,000+.
  • Race 7: Bell's the One (Corey Lanerie/Neil Pessin) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Winning Colors Stakes at 12-to-1.

  • Race 6: The exacta paid $892.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Race 9: The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $93,000.
  • Race 1: Guess who won the opener. Juan Hernandez has hit the board 49 of 63 times (78%). He is winning at a 33% clip this year.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: More than $9,000,000 bet.
  • Race 5: Another terrific finish. Flavien Prat caught Umberto Rispoli just prior to the wire. Great ride.
  • Race 6: Umberto Rispoli had the second longest shot on the board and recovered from a narrow defeat in the prior race to win here.
  • Race 7: Laura's Light (Abel Cedillo/Peter Miller) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Honeymoon Suite with a perfectly timed ride. Her Beyer of 81 wss second lowest in 30 years for this race, however.

-------------------------------
Misc.

TRAINER RICHARD MANDELLA PRIOR TO A STAKES RACES AT SANTA ANITA:
Q. How did you handle the quarantine?
A. "Red wine, a few Manhattans and a glass of beer every now of then."

GABBY GAUDET ON MARYLAND RE-OPENING: Gabby Gaudet beaming "I'm a Maryland bred. I am so excited to see racing back." Maryland has a very close racing community. Her dad was a trainer who recently passed. Her sister is an active trainer. Gabby is one of the best analysts.

1/ST.COM: The signage above the starting gates at the Stronach tracks have gone bland since the rebranding a few weeks ago? Laurel, Golden Gate is a boring light yellow and Gulf may be the worst. Santa Anita still has some charm from what I saw.

  • Imperial Hint, a multiple graded stakes winner bred in Florida who won 14 of 25 races and earned more than $2.2 million was retired.
  • Assiniboia (Manitoba) had consecutive record-breaking handles earlier this week. The handle of $1.6 million on Tuesday was snapped the next night when $1.7 million was bet.
  • Bill Mott ended the day three wins away from 5,000.
TELEVISION COVERAGE
  • NBCSN (TVG feed) shows Laurel, Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Golden Gate and others but not Churchill.
  • TVG2 shows Churchill among other tracks.
  • TVG and TVG2 offer 24/7 coverage.
  • Fox Sports 2 shows Churchill, Santa Anita, Golden Gate and others but not Gulfstream.
  • Fox Sports 1 is not scheduled to air racing but that depends on other commitments.
  • 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. ET (FS2)
  • 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. ET (NBCSN)
Tokyo Racecourse (Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan)
  • Card: Over $216,000,000 (U.S.) was bet into the Japanese Derby as part of a 12-race card that consumed a handle of $349,000,000.
  • Contrail (Yuichi Fukunaga/Yoshito Yahagi) improved to a perfect 5 5-0-0 after winning the 87th edition of the Japanese Derby this morning (ET). The 3-year-old Japanese-bred colt is two legs into winning the Japanese Triple Crown and is bidding to become the eighth ever to claim the distinction. The third leg is October 25.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Victor Rosales, who won the opened, brought an 88-to-1 shot to a place position which paid $56.60.
  • Race 7: The winner paid $92.40 when the 45-to-1 shot, the third largest odds in a field of 12, was victorious.
  • Race 9: Michael Trombetta trainees finished 1-2. The $.50 Pick 3 paid a hair under $4,000.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Opening day: The first day of the meet began at 7:00 pm ET. The regularly scheduled closing date remains Dec. 2.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 2: Campanelle (Nik Juarez/Wesley Ward), an Irish-bred purchased for $243,000, won her debut. Ward excels with babies and finished 1-2, both the lone fillies, in a field of mostly unraced 2-year-olds. The owner of the winner is Stonestreet Stables which is operated by Barbara Banke who is the head of Jackson Family Wines (Jess Jackson is deceased). As is the norm with Ward's babies keep an eye on how they develop. They could be Europe-bound. Following the race, the trainer said “Both horses early on were meant for Royal Ascot, then all this [coronavirus pandemic] came about. For the most part, we'd have had a turf race or two at Belmont early on. This is the first turf race in the United States this year. To run 1-2 was a big go. The other filly who was second is also very talented. She's a bigger filly,” Ward said. “We'll sit down with the owners of both fillies to see what they want to do moving forward. Both of these fillies, I kept them both in Florida, because they're much better on turf than dirt.”

  • Race 5: Massive payout for a 9-to-1 and 63-to-1 $2 exacta ticket which paid $918.60.
  • Race 9: Edgar Prado won for the 7,059th time. He is the 8th winningest rider in North America history. He is seven away from tying Perry Ouzts who is active and recently returned from a lengthy injury suffered last July.
  • Race 11: More than $2,000,000 was bet into the finale.
  • Edgard Zayas won three times.
  • Louis Roussel III brought horses to Gulfstream for the first time in his (approx.) 50 year career and won twice today. The Cajun has four wins among 11 starters this meet. A pretty remarkable story.
  • Rainbow Six: Will begin at $1.3 million for Thursday's card.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Handle: $11,000,000+.
  • Race 8: Crystal Cliffs (John Velazquez/Graham Motion), a French-bred, won in her debut USA race as the favorite. The 3-year-old filly had two prior races in France.
  • Top Five: Entering Sunday, the top five all-time winning trainers at Churchill Downs: Dale Romans (737 wins), Steve Asmussen (735), Bill Mott (724), D. Wayne Lukas (537) and Bernie Flint (497).
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: About $8 million wagered.
  • Race 7: Fighting Mad (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) was sent off at 10-to-1 and wired the field to win the $200,000 Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes. There was a lengthy delay prior to the race as the #1 with Mike Smith on board was obstinate, almost something never seen. It was a good job by the track personnel to finally get her to load. She was motionless for a time in the middle of the track and gave the impression she wasn't going to budge. Through careful symmetry, she was coaxed at her convenience to load. Baffert is inching within $300,000,000 earned lifetime and likely will be the third trainer in U.S. history to reach that feat.

  • Race 5: Agamemnon (Jose Valdivia, Jr./Ron McAnally) won at 6-to-1 by going 7-wide and driving away to victory. A profitable decision by the rider who landscaped the track ideally. The 88-year-old trainer, in the Hall of Fame and a 3-time Eclipse Award winner for Trainer of the Year in North America, got his start in 1958 at Hollywood Park.

New York will not be aired on either TVG (1 or 2) as NYRA has a contract with Fox Sports. Thus, NBCSN will not be airing Belmont this weekend or the foreseeable future.

The big 3 of New York, Stronach tracks and Churchill properties have varying agreements.

it's not just Belmont..... Saratoga or anything NYRA Controls is leaving TVG/NBCSN...... remember Churchill was flipped to TVG2..... APPARENTLY that network has video, but not audio..... they want NYRA Bets to take off the way TVG/HRTV (TVG2) did SO outside of potentially Belmont Stakes DAY which is exclusively NBC

the other streaming option that's popped up since is RTN, it's just not a network by trade

the reason is the head of NYRA Bets was running TVG until 2013

It is unrelated but the Monarch signal had been in dispute in some states. It carries some tracks by simulcast. Gulf, Laurel, etc are sent through Monarch. It is affecting the state of Arizona and OTBs there. Very interesting for those of us with interests that extends beyond the surface

I mentioned a few days ago that New Jersey and Delaware could profit from what is ongoing in Pennsylvania. Delaware was horrible last year and almost anything positive will be a boon but New Jersey possibly has reaped benefits.

A quote from Monmouth Park issued today:

“For the first time in many years we anticipate a full stable area,”
said John F. Heims, Director of Racing/Racing Secretary for Monmouth. “The demand for stalls this year has been overwhelming with more than 2,600 applications looking to fill approximately 1,500 stalls.”

Here is more on the NY coalition with Fox Sports and the removal of content from TVG. This is the first article I have read...

'Inconvenienced' fans? Racing's ADWs draw lines in TV turf war

Football fans know the drill. The AFC is on CBS. The NFC is on Fox. And everyone seems to get along.

Now racing is falling into a similar pattern. Santa Anita is on TVG and NBCSN. Churchill Downs is on FS1 and FS2.

But this is more about a turf war, one that will manifest itself in June with Belmont Park being televised only on the Fox Sports networks and regional cable channels like MSG+. As things stand now the New York Racing Association – including Saratoga – will not be seen on TVG. Not on its main channel, and not even on TVG2.

“NYRA has informed us that it will not entertain granting non-exclusive television rights to TVG,” said Kip Levin, CEO of TVG. “We are disappointed that after a 20-year partnership and at such a crucial time for the sport, racing fans will be inconvenienced because Belmont Park’s races will not be available on either TVG or our simulcasts of ‘Trackside Live’ on NBCSN.”

Unless there is an unexpected, 11th-hour change, TVG viewers may see NYRA races only on the TVG.com digital platforms. It is the almost same thing that has happened with races from Churchill Downs since the current meet began May 15.

“This year we were presented with a unique opportunity to get an unprecedented amount of televised coverage from Belmont Park on national television on (the Fox Sports) family of networks,” said executive producer Tony Allevato of NYRA TV, which produces America’s Day at the Races in partnership not only with Fox Sports but also Churchill Downs.

“Additionally, MSG+ will air daily, full-card coverage of Belmont Park. TVG viewers and customers will continue to be able to watch and wager on Belmont races via TVG.com and the TVG app.”

This comment below from the article above needs to be explained and enhanced. College football is popular and with a wealth of options every weekend, the comparison to horse racing is lost. It would be naive to state people enjoy the sport of football because of the game itself. We all know even before sports betting was legalized that fans had their own self-interests in mind. What did Al Michaels -- one of the all-time greats -- say once in an NFL blow out in rebuttal to the analyst saying "No one cares at this point..."? He mentioned the over-under in so many words.

Horse racing is different. Nothing compares to a simulcast facility. Watching horse racing on one channel rather than in a multi-purpose venue is akin to seeing an NHL game on TV at home compared to live in person. The difference is massive. There are benefits to both but the experience in person is much superior.

However, horse bettors do not simply play New York, Florida, Kentucky and California. Saturdays are difficult. That is understood. But it helps enhance the brand by promoting other tracks through visuals. I like Laurel because the fields are deep! Sometimes, oftentimes, deeper than California. Of course, the star power sells. But let's not be critical of our sport! The smaller tracks are boosted by exposure. We get it online but don't forget that while "Alabama-LSU" is large the reason some networks air "Texas Tech-Arkansas" is because there are plenty of networks that broadcast college football. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

“I don’t know that it’s necessarily a good thing to have the same races on multiple channels, because at the end someone is going to get left out,” Allevato said. “It’s no different if you look at college football at the national level. Everybody is going to want to show Alabama-LSU, and nobody is going to want to show Texas Tech vs. Arkansas. I think it’s better to have two different channels show different races, and you present those races the best way possible.”

  • Luis Saez got suspended seven days by New York for a race last year this while he is now serving his Kentucky Derby suspension. He will not ride through June 13.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Handle: Over $4,000,000 bet today.
  • Race 10: Jevian Toledo won the finale and with it became the leading rider at the meet with five victories. The meet concluded its opening extended 3-day weekend today.
  • Trevor McCarthy won three times.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $3.6 million.
  • Cha-ching: Large payouts today, part of the extension Tampa Bay received from the state of Florida to continue racing into June. The track will race on June 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 24 in addition to June 30 and July 1, the latter two days done annually due to fiscal obligations. Then Tampa Bay goes dark until around Thanksgiving.
  • Race 8: Felix the Fox (Huber Villa-Gomez/Ron Potts) finally broke his maiden, in his 13th attempt. He placed in six of his 12 prior races. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $26,000.
  • Race 6: The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $2,500.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 4 paid an enormous $51,000. The $.50 Pick 5 -- in succession 1-2-3-3-4 -- was a tsunami with a staggering payday of $130,223.65.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Stewart Elliott, who has won the Kentucky Derby among other achievements in a long career and is 37 wins from 5,000, was 8 4-2-0 today. Four wins.
  • Lane Luzzi rode two winners.

Arrogate's passing is heart wrenching. A true champ. Compared to some of the greats and while that may have been excessive I enjoyed seeing babies in the Unbridled lineage succeed. A son to Unbridled's Song, and a grandson to Unbridled, he was a force. Seven years of age is far too young. He didn't get to enjoy retirement too long.

From DRF: Arrogate won 7 of 11 career starts, including four Grade/Group 1 races, and retired with earnings of $17,422,600, a record for a North American-based racehorse.
