Well, this is definitely what you do if you're completely innocent. My 'I didn't give my race horse banned raceday substances' shirt has a lot of people asking questions already answered by my shirt.

The overnights are in for Friday's card at Pimlico highlighted by the Black-Eyes Susan:

  • Russells: The hubby-wife Russell team has six entered as a duo. This is a good test for the Maryland-based pair against the obvious strong national connections.
  • The card: has 14 races which will stretch from 11:30 a.m. ET to after 6:30 pm ET.
  • Equibase for a cleaner read: Equibase | North American Entries

For Saturday:

Auburn, Maine
A review for opening day:

First Tracks Cumberland opens for racing

CUMBERLAND, Maine - Saturday's opening day at First Tracks Cumberland enjoyed a large harness racing crowd and widespread support from on-track punters, as well as simulcast outlets, for the nine-race card.

The first extended pari-mutuel meeting to open in over twenty years that was not owned by a casino enjoyed mild temperatures that brought several hundred people to the Cumberland Fairground's apron to enjoy a full day of harness racing.

Over nine races, the swiftest of the day went to iconic driver and Maine-native Bruce Ranger, who steered 12-year-old Ira Chief to victory for trainer Dennis Whittemore and owner Diane Whittemore in 1:57.2. Six races went faster than 2:00 on the half mile oval and only two races were won by the betting favorites.
season continues today and tomorrow @ 4:15

Grants Pass (OR) is the latest track to record a record handle. It is the only parimutuel track in the state with Portland Meadows shuttered in 2019.

Grants Pass handled close to half a million dollars on opening night last night.

A small track but it is a lifeline for the industry in the state of Oregon.

Spendthrift moving some of its horses from Baffert's barn

Following Sea, a 3-year-old trained by Bob Baffert, was withdrawn from consideration for Saturday’s Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes at Pimlico and will be moved to trainer Todd Pletcher in New York, according to Ned Toffey, the general manager of Spendthrift Farm, which owns the colt.

Toffey further said that four 2-year-olds that were shipped to Baffert in California will be moved, most likely to trainer Richard Mandella, who is stabled at Santa Anita.

“Given the circumstances we thought it was best to hit the pause button,” Toffey said about Spendthrift’s relationship with Baffert. “I think we need to step back and let’s see how things play out. We’re not ruling anything out in the future.”

Belmont (New York):
  • Afternoon delight: This is the second of three consecutive Thursdays in which post time for the card will be 3:00 pm ET.
  • Handle: $8.2 million.
  • Race 2: Happy Soul (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward), a daughter to Runhappy, broke her maiden in her second try by more than 11 lengths. Have we run out of superlatives with Ward and his staggering numbers with 2-year-olds? Lemieux (Luis Saez/Mark Casse), a $100,000 purchase and Florida-bred who is a daughter to Nyquist, was a well-beaten second place in her first race.

Pimlico (Maryland):

  • Timothy Keefe, who was 2-for-48 this year entering today, was a seismic 3-for-3. He has a long Maryland presence that dates about 30 years.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $22,000. As mentioned once or twice, the track has been paying out handsomely this meet.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edwin Gonzalez had a natural hat trick + 1 following wins in races 2 through 5. Gonzalez added a fifth win in the 8th and final race. He won five times on seven rides. He recently moved his tack to south Florida following much success at Penn National.

  • Race 9: The $.50 tri paid over $2,100.
  • Handle: $4.3 million.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Leading jockeys: Florent Geroux (11 wins) and Tyler Gaffalione (10 wins).
  • Leading trainers: Brad Cox (6 wins) and Albert Stall (6 wins).

  • Mark Casse sent out three winners, two at Gulfstream and one at Churchill.
  • Brittany Russell won with her husband riding in Maryland and she was also victorious at Belmont. A good day for the phenom.
  • Michael Maker also recorded three wins covering two tracks.
Belmont (New York):
  • Trevor McCarthy had four winners including a natural hat trick. Earlier this week, he received the news that his jockey wife Katie Davis is expecting their first child. Both come from racing families including their dads who were riders.
  • Race 2: Joycee Haz Pizzaz (Kendrick Carmouche/Orlando Moda) won. Say that horse with a local accent.
  • Handle: $5 million.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: Just an exemplary day of racing. Close finishes, locals held their own against national outfits. Good prices throughout.
  • Handle: $27.675 million bet breaks the mark set in 2019 of $21.3 million for the Black-Eyed Susan card. Another track and/or card with a record-breaking handle.
  • Attendance: Capped at 10,000.
  • Weather: Scenic and ideal.
  • Favorites: Won just four times in 14 races.
  • Locals vs. Visitors: John Velazquez and Joel Rosario rode three winners apiece. In a day in which the visitors were expected to win many races, and they did, those currently with tacks in Maryland won five times. Not bad. The Ortiz brothers went 13 1-4-3. I expect them to combine for more than one win tomorrow.
  • Race 13: Army Wife (Joel Rosario/Michael Maker) won the 97th edition of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the second race in the Triple Tiara, at odds of 9-to-2. The $190,000 purchase, who is a daughter to Declaration of War, won for the third time in eight starts and got stronger as the race progressed. She covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.63. Her trainer called her "a hard luck horse" but this race erased that label.

  • Race 12: Last Judgment (Jose Ortiz/Michael Maker) wired the field to win the $250,000 Grade 3 Pimlico Match Series Stakes. He won from the outside post. The Florida-bred was a $300,000 purchase in 2018 and won for the 8th time in 18 starts which includes alternating wins and losses in his past 10 starts.
  • Race 11: Alda (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) won the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes in another 3-way photo finish. She offered an abundance of value at 7-to-1 and this was one that I touted as a Play of the Day (for the record my other Play of the Day placed in the finale at 4-to-1 barely losing to a 27-to-1 shot).
350447db03d04f1ba7a9135c88b50b90.jpg
  • Race 10: Red Ghost (John Velazquez/Wesley Ward) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes. She has won three of four lifetime starts and each win has come in a different state. This was her first try at a graded stakes. She held on in a 3-way photo finish.

  • Race 9: Caravel (Florent Geroux/Elizabeth Merryman) won the $100,000 The Very One Stakes. The trainer -- who is also the owner and breeder -- seemed well, merry, upon victory in what was a 3-way photo finish. A tremendous conclusion to the race. It could be her first black type win among the 152 in her career. She comes from an extensive racing family with a rich lineage in Maryland including her sister Katharine Voss.

  • Race 8: Spice is Nice (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff Match Series Stakes. The 4-year-old daughter to Curlin was bought for $1,050,000 in 2018 by Robert and Lawana Low (owners of a profitable Missouri-based trucking company) and won a graded stakes for the first time. She has been victorious in four of her seen lifetime races.
  • Race 1: Mokheef (Forest Boyce/Suzanne Stettinius) won the opener at 7-1 with a powerful finish from 9th to 1st in the stretch. The $1 tri paid over $2,200 with bombers completing the ticket. The trainer participated for the United States in the 2012 Olympics in pentathlon and was involved in foxhunting. She has just three lifetime wins with 25 starters.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $5.7 million.
  • Edgard Zayas won three times and now is the meet's leading rider with 38 victories, three more than Paco Lopez, his closest challenger.
  • Mark Casse sent out two horses and both won.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Leading jockey: Tyler Gaffalione rode two winners and pulled ahead of Florent Geroux in the bragging rights for leading jockey. Geroux was in Maryland.
Lone Star (Texas):
  • Lane Luzzi had another 3-win day.
Golden Gate (California):
  • Race 8: The $,20 Pick 6 paid out over $71,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $5.7 million.

Tampa Bay Downs' meet totaled $394,698,371 which is a 16.6% increase compared to the 2018-19 meet, the last comparable schedule. Tampa Bay has one of the most lavish turf courses in North America and the little track that could has a strong following for winter racing precisely due to its turf course which is the best on the east coast during winter months.

Tampa Bay runs a 2-day meet June 30-July 1 for fiscal reasons and then is dark until some point in late November.

Pimlico began at 10:30 a.m. with a thriller. A 4-to-1 shot beat a 3-to-5 in an upset and fought back on the overwhelming favorite. Nose up/head down, got the bob. $1.3 million bet in the pool. Preakness buoys the card but Pimlico is looking at bright numbers today.

The jockey unseated at the start walked off and reported to be fine. Loose horse apprehended without issue.
