Belmont Park arena project to be delayed

“There will be no shovels in the ground in the first half of this year,” said Tammie Williams, community organizer with the Belmont Park Community Coalition, a group that has opposed the project.

Rachel Shatz, ESD’s vice president of planning and environmental review, said Thursday that an enormous amount of comments have already been received on the arena plan, which has made the task of putting together the final environmental impact statement that much more difficult.

“I think this process has had quite an additional amount of public outreach than our typical ones, so I think this one probably could set a record for the number of comments that we’ve received, but that is the process working,” Shatz said, according to a transcript of the meeting provided by ESD.

More than 2,000 letters in opposition of the project have been submitted to ESD officials so far, according to Williams.

It’s not delayed. Schedule has always been issuing Final EIS in Q2. That’s still the case. There was hope to expedite, but that was never set in stone, especially with the need to play everything by the books.

This is a crap article who only quotes a community organizer whose opposed to building anything on the site.

Which he/she has little control to any control over what goes on with the site. With folks people opposing it. You can't really try to speed things up. Some will do anything to stop it including taking it to the courts and try to get the courts to stop it. Environmental reviews don't kill projects it only delays it and makes it cost even more.

One factor that concerns Elmont residents is the concept that Belmont will have the winter horse racing that is now at Aqueduct.

No secret the state embraces the idea of Aqueduct becoming a full-blown resort casino instead of a slots parlor and winterizing Belmont would make that easier.

Nassau was never a long term solution. Why in the world would OVG cancel the belmont project. its going to its environmental review process that was never really meant to be spent up. remember Review process doesn't kill projects it just delays and make it more expensive. Remember Barclays took several years of environmental process red tape before it got under construction.

OVG manage to get Seattle's arena project passed the review process with zero people objecting and Seattle takes forever to get things done.

even boomer said on wfan this morning that Belmont makes no sense whatsoever, that they will never sell out corporate luxury boxes in Belmont. no one is going to spend 700-900 million dollars on arena where the main tenant can not sell out the building, what happens to the other 320 calendar dates when the islanders do not play?, who will fill the arena with the remaining 320 calendar days. concerts ,wrestling , boxing are booked at MSG, Barclays and The Rock already plus Nassau Coliseum. have any of you looked at the economic climate in NYC recently? Are you aware there is NO Lirr service going westbound from long island to Belmont and the MTA said there is no way to make tracks unless an additional 300 mil is spent on tracks that the MTA is not going to spend. Who will spend the money on trackwork? this is a pipe dream that will go the way of the proposed west side stadium that never got built.

Boomers talking out of his ass. The development is not whether or not the islanders will be tops in attendance-the development team makes their money from everything else-concerts, shows (this is why OVG is involved) and the high-end shopping village. The whole complex is 100% getting built.
