Vancouver was the only market where TSN and Sportsnet were competing. In Winning and Hamilton TSN was the only all-sports station in the market.

Toronto has both Sportsnet (CJCL) and TSN radio (CHUM)

Between the Pipes
I'm a lawyer. I was fired once from a big national law firm. They gave me two weeks to clean up my files and desk and to conclude a trial I had coming up in the next coming days. I may not have wanted to help the law firm, but I still wanted to help the client.

But yes, at my current employer, when they've let lawyers go they've been notified at the start of the day and escorted off the premises.

I work in I.T. and the last company I worked for was taken over. Before I found out I was being let go you can be damned sure that the firms involved made sure there was no way I could get anywhere near a computer on premises or remotely access the network. Not that I would have done anything, but I could have destroyed them if so inclined. It seems cold-hearted but businesses are just protecting themselves.

Can someone explain to me why radio has been effected by the pandemic? Is it advertisers dropping? I mean, I get that sports coverage was difficult at times, but two major sports are currently playing and a third is about to begin. The worst is behind us.

Don't discount the sports podcast genre eating away at their listenership. Sports podcasts are everywhere now, especially in the past year when they realized how easy and cheap it was to podcast from home. Then factor in so many working from home and can use their wifi to listen to a podcast on demand vs. radio signal. The market for sports talk is only so large. If I'm listening to a podcast then I'm not listening to sports radio at the same time.

Podcasts is a great point, but I'll point out you can stream radio stations. I listen to most radio shows after they air actually. I wait for the podcast of the show.

1260 in Edmonton has WHL Oil Kings - that's it. I doubt those get much in ratings.
No Oiler rights? Interesting the station avoided the axe. That’s good for Edmonton sports’ fans for sure.

You don't have to be a rights holder to be at least moderately successful. 1260 for example will run pre-and post-game shows for the Oilers and Football team even without playing the games, and they get decent ratings doing so. Not great, but decent.

The morning show though does often make fun of themselves for being on the dying medium of AM radio so I think they know there position is a bit precarious as well.

Maybe it’s more the Esks that are keeping the station going. Football is nothing here in Van, but it’s big up there, right?
1040 had the Lions and the Caps, while doing the Canuck’s pre and post game stuff too. Their ratings were actually way better than the station with the Canucks - 650. I think we are kind of stunned out here.

Thats crazy. I listen to more radio (talk radio specifically) now then ever working from home

I usually only listen to the radio during my commute and music while working. Now that i am working from home, i only end up listening to music and not streaming any radio. I am sure many are doing the same which is resulting in the drop in listeners.

But they don't have EE rights either. Never have. The only thing they have rights to is the Oil Kings.
