The middle harmonies in Dr. R are f***ing tough. Just like in Lady M.

And those f***ers make it so easy. When you tear down those songs and the music therein it really opens a third eye that not a lot of folks can experience truly.

What I mean is if you are a musician, with real, in depth musical knowledge, some of those songs/chords/harmonies/etc will blow you away
Hell, I have the musical ability of a potato and a lot of it still blows be away.

My first several listens to Sgt Pepper (the song, not the album) and Paperback Writer I never realized just how many harmonies there are in both songs. Sgt Pepper in particular. If you're not paying close enough attention it doesn't sound like much.

There's a guy on YouTube who breaks down the harmonies in Beatles songs. He's covered most of them. He does a good job but I still can't for the life of me pick out George's part in Yes It Is. Or all of Paul's part, for that matter

Yep, he's the one  He's the one who taught me that John is the one singing the high harmony "in MIIIIIIIIINE" on I Saw Her Standing There. He's where I learned about the Pepper harmonies and just how many there are in the song. His This Boy, Yes It Is, and Yellow Submarine videos were especially helpful to me when I was first learning the Beatles

Is Fradua the name of the channel you’re recommending? I’m interested.

The actual name of the channel is Beatles Vocal Harmony; Galeazzo Frudua is the name of the guy who runs it. In his videos he introduces the song and explains the intricacies of the harmonies. Then he sings the harmonies, first played together then broken down individually. He has a kind of thick accent but is pretty easy to understand and does a really good job of both singing the parts and showing who sings what and how it's supposed to sound. Recently he's been uploading the isolated vocals from the actual Beatles songs.

Listened to Yes It Is on iso vocals just now. For people who fuss over their lack of ability playing instruments should listen to that to better understand their greatness. So tight.

I just made a list on US/UK #1 singles where I prefer the B-Side to the A-Side... anyone else have such a list?

#1 in UK/US Singles
Love Me Do / PS I Love You
Can't Buy Me Love / You Can’t Do That
A Hard Day's Night / I Should Have Known Better
Eight Days A Week / I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party
All You Need Is Love / Baby You’re A Rich Man
Hello, Goodbye / I Am The Walrus

#1 in UK/US Singles
Love Me Do / PS I Love You
Can't Buy Me Love / You Can’t Do That
A Hard Day's Night / I Should Have Known Better
Eight Days A Week / I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party
All You Need Is Love / Baby You’re A Rich Man
Hello, Goodbye / I Am The Walrus
P.S. I Love You and Don't Let Me Down are probably the only two B-sides I definitively like better than the A-sides. Revolution is pretty close as well. If Yes It Is didn't back one of my top five favorite Beatles songs it'd also be an easy choice. Most of the A's and B's I like pretty much equally. Admittedly I forget about the songs that were released as singles here but not in the UK so I never even thought of I Don't Want to Spoil the Party, which would be another one I prefer over the A.

My one friend/coworker who's the biggest Beatles fan I know besides myself argued last week that the early B-sides (Thank You Girl, I'll Get You) are just as strong as the A-sides, which I don't 100% disagree with.

I filled out your survey, but didn't include any "worst" choices.

When I got into the Beatles (Napster) I didn't listen by album, and I tended to ignore the songs I didn't like.

My favorites, though, are:

In My Life
I Wanna Hold Your Hand
Hide Your Love Away
Paperback Writer
Day Tripper
She Loves You
I Saw Her Standing There
A Hard Day's Night
I Should Have Known Better
Norwegian Wood
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Rocky Raccoon
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Back in the USSR
Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End
Let it Be
Hey Jude
Revolution
We Can Work it Out
Ballad of John and Yoko

Just a reminder on the survey front, for anyone who wants to take it but hasn't yet: I'm still planning to close the survey tomorrow afternoon around 5 eastern. Results will be posted shortly after. (That, of course, doesn't mean the thread as a whole has to end.)

I think Thank You Girl is very strong, but I think I’ll Get You is a definite drop in quality.

So many of their B-sides were of A-side quality.

Their singles started getting so good that they had to start issuing double A-sides

This Boy
Yes It Is
I'm Down
Rain
would all be most other singers' best known songs. I've joked that Steven Tyler has made an entire 50 year career out of I'm Down and the last half of Hey Jude  Thank You Girl was 100% A-side quality for its day

And that's not even counting their B-sides that pretty much everyone acknowledges (Walrus, Revolution, Don't Let Me Down)

The Beatles are fascinating to me.

No one can deny their influence on rock music. Lennon & McCartney are among, if not the best songwriting duo of all time. But I’ve lived half a lifetime and the Beatles have been broken up longer than I’ve been alive. Also if my math is correct in December of this year Lennon will have been dead longer than he was alive, yet the Beatles remain as popular and present in popular culture as ever.

It’s a testament to their contributions to the world, but there are other artists that have made similar contributions that are not still held in such high regard in popular culture. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Van Gogh, Michelangelo etc. Maybe when the Beatles are as far in the rear view mirror as these people that will be looked at similarly, but for now they are still very much at the forefront of the discussion and I don’t think it’s only among people who were teenagers in the 60’s.

I'm serious when I say the Beatles are in that Bach/Mozart exalted realm of music and are entrenched there. Who else is there is a discussion for a different day

My damn laptop shut down right as I was in the middle of typing my post and I lost both the post and the power point where I was keeping the data. Will post results now but after all that I really dont feel like posting the pie charts as well, so it'll be pretty bare bones.

Long wall of text incoming. 64 responses in all. Not everyone answered each one, but they didn't have to, of course. Maybe sometime soon I'll add the percentages, if not the pie charts themselves.

I'm just gonna warn I think I missed a few in my frustrated haste. For example, a poster in the thread I made in the entertainment board commented that There's a Place isn't in the final results even though he voted for it. I had already had a long day and losing all my progress with posting the results here didn't do anything to help me. I will double check and revise in the coming days.

Your's truly was the lone Words of Love, I Need You, and Yer Blues "favorite" votes. Couldn't help but notice the Yer Blues least favorite vote *squints*

I need to talk to whoever voted Nowhere Man as their least favorite. Those harmonies bruh

Where is my Long Talk Sally brother?!

I'd also like to ahem "talk" to whoever voted my all time favorite Beatles song their least favorite on Revolver (And Your Bird Can Sing). Just talk

I also saw some astonishing things from my perspective. People have got some explaining to do.
