Hi guys,

New to hockey, quick question:

I recently did the Bauer 3D Skate lab fitting and it put me at a Supreme 6 EE

I picked up a pair of the S180s and they fit really great length and widthwise however when I do the "pencil test" for instep measurement, my foot doe touch the pen a bit, therefore failing the test.

My skates aren't heat molded yet because I don't know if need to return the skates are not.

How important is that pencil test? Should I ignore and go with the 3D skatelab result?

Thanks

It's not the be all and end all, but proceed with caution.

I've always failedthe pencil test a lot because I'm an adult with size 4.5 feet. I'm fine with the skates I have now, N9000s, but I constantly have to be diligent about lace bite as the skates age and the tongue breaks down.

After two years, I've had to add padding to the tongue and rejig my lacing style for when I'm on the ice for long periods, 3hr+, working on edging and stuff.

Otherwise, I'm fine without extra padding for playing games. But this isn't my first dance, so I know ticks to address the lack of volume.

Just an update, I contacted the Bauer Fit Specialist and this is what they had to say:

Thank you for your e-mail and your interest in Bauer Hockey Products. Yes no worries on the pencil test was a barometer before we had the 3D Skate Lab. So you are completely fine and have fun and good luck with your new skates.

The skate lab isn't 100% accurate. I did it and it put me into a size 5EE Nexus. I wear a 4.5D Nexus as a compromise because of volume, but I have to do mods to make the heel lock work. In terms of width and length should be in a 4.5EE supreme.

If I followed the skate lab recommendations, I'd be in a skate that's too large and too wide. There's still no substitute for a good skate fitter and being able to try on the skates. I'm fortunate enough to have a shop with a 30 day fit guarantee. You can exchange skates even after moulding and sharpening.

For some, failing the pencil test is no big deal. For others, it means everything. It all depends on the person.

Small test I do is I put on the skates at home and tie them like I would going to play hockey. I leave them on for 45 minutes to an hour while I watch tv. This gives me a good idea where all the pressure is being applied on my foot. If there's any real pain, that's a warning sign.

I just checked this out as I am thinking of new skates. For me it was suggested the Supreme line in 7D. I currently have Vapor XXIX (I think) that are 7EE. I tried on the S190 and wow...what a nice skate! Super stiff though, but that's the way they are now. I'd have them baked if I go ahead with them. Might work on current skates first though, but they are pushing 10 yrs probably.
