I think Barkov is currently a more well rounded player; however, moving forward it would be silly to choose a player 5 years older when their current abilities aren't all that far apart in the first place.

@Regal had a great post comparing Barkov and Pettersson defensively before the thread was closed. Here it is:

Barkov is better to casuals, Pettersson is better at ice hockey.

nobody posts on HF if they are a casual

Casual fans cant even name most the players on their team in most sports - nobody is signing up for a hockey forum board to talk a sport they watch casually

I may be bias, but this is pretty easily Pettersson for me. Now and in the future.

96 points isn’t what Barkov is, that very well could be his career high in points. A little overrated defensively too.

Extremely interesting comparison. Pettersson has Kucherov-like sneakiness and potential offensively and understands the game very well-defensive side included. Looking at his play, it is more that he knows how to create offense without exposing himself or his line to defensive risks. More that type than being a monster in dz winning pucks and battles.. Barkov on the other hand is also wary of d-risks while making plays but is a real pain in the ass in d-zone and with steals and pass interceptions. On top he is all the time helping out his teammates. With quick passes or having his tape open very quickly. Hard to say which one is better. I love Barkov because of hia dedication to his linemates-whoever they are. But would be hard to say no to Pettersson-like talent as well. Homie biase, I take Barkov.

As we speak today? Maybe Barkov.

But I still see Pettersson having a Forsberg type career.

    Maybe Barkov?

It was Barkov going into this season, and after this past year I don't know how anyone could choose Pettersson with a straight face

A lot of people have a crow to eat based off some of the takes early in this thread

Barkov is plain and simple a better hockey player then Pettersson. Not knocking EP, but he isn't near Barkov at this point.

Barkov is insane right now but I do think this is his best. Not sure what EP’s best is but it could be better. He is that talented.

I really don't see the issue with the thread tbh. Congrats to Barkov on a great season where he actually played up to his reputation, but while he always had the talent, his trends weren't suggesting that he would have this type of year, and it's hard to put too much stock into a 26 game season for Pettersson where one 5 game pointless streak at the beginning of the season makes his averages look poor.

Well EP doesnt have single season over 1 ppg and people have been ranking him into top5 centers in NHL 2 years straight now. Probably most overrated player in the game at the moment.

I haven't seen anyone claim he was top 5 already except for a couple overzealous people like Dom and Ben White, and no one was doing it after his rookie year.

Sure, but until this year it was also an outlier in his career and his numbers since he broke out each year were more in line with what Pettersson has put up since he entered the league. Yes he played injured last year, but it's still not a great bet a player will do something he's only done once before. Barkov also played huge minutes that year, so his P/60 was surprisingly stable compared to other seasons 5v5 and only a bit better at ES. The Panthers also had an unusually good PP that year that seemed unlikely to continue and it hasn't. Barkov this year increased his efficiency 5v5 while bringing back his dominance in possession that had been missing since 16-17. He put it all together this year and had a great season, no doubt. But it wasn't the norm for him by any means.

Yes, but the small sample size before injury means he didn't have time for that to balance out over the course of the year. That's the problem with small samples. Hence the mention of a 26 game season.

No one has ranked him in the top 5 centers of the game.

In the top 10-15 C threads, Pettersson barely gets a mention.

Still calling him overrated is laughable, because he is underrated more than anything.

The hype was getting out of hand with Petterson last year.

The year before Barkov hit 96 he went 78 in 79 and on injured season he still put up 62 in 66 games.

    So:
    78 in 79 games
    96 in 82 games
    62 in 66 games(injured season)
    58 points in 50 games

Watching Barkov for years if he even gets okay linemates he should be a consistent +ppg C.
