    Hm let’s do this right:

Rookie season: 28 goals in 71 games - 33 goal pace (on a horrible team)
Sophomore season: 27 goals in 68 games - 33 goal pace (on a pretty decent team)

That’s pretty good for a 19-21 year old center who’s a pass first guy play making center and borderline elite defensively already with fantastic underlying stats. Amazing the way people hold this shortened season against Pettersson.

Right Right. Every canuck player is massively overrated, while Leaf players are gods gift to hockey. We get it.

Petterson is terrific but this should not be close.

Barkov is the most overrated player in the league. Some people actually think he’s good at defence.

He's had a positive 5v5 goal differential every year except his rookie season, playing for the Florida Panthers . . .

    He's obviously doing something right.

The Panthers have averaged 92 points per 82 games in that time frame. If a star center has a negative goal differential on a team like that there's something wrong. He's obviously a good player, but his 96 point year gets used as if that's his norm when it was likely an outlier, and his underlying defensive metrics have not been good since 16-17.

For reference, the Canucks were on pace to be a 93 point team this year, and Pettersson had a +26 goals differential 5v5. Barkov's largest differential was +17 and that was on a 103 point team. Goal differential doesn't work in Barkov's favour here

    Tough...damn.

I think I take Barkov, but I am really weary of overrating his defence since it seemed to plummet this season. If that doesn't go back up to Selke consideration levels, I take lil' Petey.

Pettersson is as overrated as some of the people in this thread are saying Barkov is.

They’re both pretty even right now.

I like Petterson moving forward though. He’s only 21-years old and has already made quite an impact at the NHL level.

I like Barkov, but EP is trending to be something special. Right now I would say Barkov has the slight edge but I think moving fwd I think this will be EP. Love them both, there is no wrong play here.

I think Pettersson's got the higher ceiling offensively, but Barkov's got the higher ceiling defensively.

Tough call. Barkov's the safer bet, but I think Pettersson's offensive ceiling might make me lean toward him.

You seem to have a knack of downplaying and undermining top level Canuck players so this isnt anything new coming from you.

Not emotionally attached to either player nor either team.
I would say Barkov is barely the better player now, Pettersson looks on a trajectory to be marginally better in the future.

I would also say that the difference between 9/2/1995 and 11/12/1998 is three years.

Pettersson is underrated by hockey men but probably overrated by stats nerds. His zone start percentage is so out of wack that it really raises some questions. He is obviously a really good player though, just have a suspicion that some of his analytics would come a bit down to earth if his coach started to trust him anywhere outside of the offensive zone.

Aho vs Pettersson is an interesting debate. Pettersson is better with the puck but Aho is better without the puck.

Just because Green tries to play to Pettersson's strengths, doesn't mean he doesn't trust him. Pettersson is an elite two-way player but the Canucks have enough bottom six grinders that they don't have any need to have him play such heavy minutes.

I mean this is the same guy who argue Casey Mittlestadt was a bette prospect than Pettersson, so he’s not exactly a a hockey genius.

I voted Barkov now and Pettersson moving forward. However, reading the thread maybe I've not seen Barkov enough lately as considering 2-way player was his strength seems like he's not that great as I thought defensively? Pettersson for me needs to fill out more so he's not pushed off the puck as much but offensively and defensive positioning he's heading to elite level soon enough. His vision is amazing it's his physical stature that keeps him back until he fills out more. Guys skill level is already there for all to see. He has a much higher ceiling for me then Barkov and the floor is not shabby either.
