Downie is better at every aspect of the game other than faceoffs and discipline. They're not close.

Talbot plays a ton of PK minutes. Downie plays none. Talbot is an excellent physical player just like Downie.

Hey look on the bright side...

Maybe this is a move to keep cap space so they can keep Stastny and not lose him in a deal like this simply because they can't sign him.

Flyers should have been forced to add a pick or something.

Fine, Downie was a pending UFA and perhaps was going to cost too much. But if he was going to be traded, should have obviously have been for a defenseman.

Talbot is one of my favorite bottom six forwards in the NHL. But even with Downie pending UFA status, that is not a fair deal.

Not good Patrick. Not good.

Brutal. I hope there is more to this, like Talbot and Coburn for Downie and a pick or prospect. Otherwise, this makes zero sense.

Nope.

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired forward Maxime Talbot from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Steve Downie.

Talbot, 29, has appeared in all 11 games for the Flyers this year, tallying a goal and one assist. A native of Lemoyne, Quebec, Talbot has recorded 77 goals and 77 assists for 154 points in 515 career games between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He has also skated in 77 career playoff games, totaling 39 points (18g/21a).

“Maxime is a veteran forward who has won a Stanley Cup and has a lot of NHL experience,†said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic. “We’re looking forward to him bringing that experience to our club.â€

Talbot helped the Penguins win the 2009 Stanley Cup after tallying 13 points (8g/5a) in 24 postseason games that spring. He scored both goals in Pittsburgh’s 2-1 series-clinching victory over the Red Wings in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final at Detroit. Selected by Pittsburgh in the eighth round (234th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft, Talbot spent his first six seasons with the Penguins before signing with Philadelphia as a free agent on July 1, 2011.

Terrible deal. Even if Downie wanted more than we could pay him, why not keep him around until the deadline? You'd have to think a team would have given up more for a 2nd/3rd line winger. And right in the middle of us winning. This coupled with the news about Varly...I wonder how the team will perform.

This was bad. Downie is one of my favorite players in the league, and you guys were rolling. Bad decision if there are no more pieces in it.

Downie was our #1 RW. Talbot was Philadelphia's (a crap team) #4 C. I don't expect #1 RWers to play PK. How was Talbot's PP time in PHI?

Let me check NHL.com, and... yup, we're still #1 in the league in the penalty kill department. Clearly didn't need to make such a drastic talent downgrade to acquire a PK specialist.

Poor asset management. First move I don't like from this regime.

Well that is just crap. Only reasoning I can see behind this is Downie had a blowup after being demoted to the 3rd line in the last game, and the team basically decided to move him now. But I have a hard time seeing that being the case.

Ummmmm why? :help:

I was so in love with this team just yesterday... we are 10-1 why the hell was this trade necessary?

Hopefully it's not Roy's obsession with having Stanley Cup winners in the locker room.

Imagine being part of that Avs team. One of the guys is traded for a downgrade and your goalie is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Ugh, not looking forward to Friday's game at all.

Dot understand why this move wasn't made for a D at least... But nope let's acquire another 4th line center like we don't have enough of those
