Shocked he signed that QO. He left a lot of money on the table.
Sakic probably had a chat with Jost and made it clear that there was no way he could stay on the team with our cap structure the way it is and with good UFA's being available at cheap AAV's. So it was basically a choice for Jost on whether he wants to stay on a contender, or get traded to a team like Florida.

The only way trading Jost makes sense is if it's a sweetener to a bigger piece moving out. Trade bait would imply that he has the value to bring in something good on his own, which he doesn't have. There's no point trading him for picks because you aren't getting an early round selection in exchange for him and Jost is already the calibre of player that you'd hope to get out of a 4th-rounder or later, so you're just resetting the clock in the hope that maybe a late-round pick turns into anything other than an AHLer. Unless if people think we can get a change of scenery trade to happen and somehow end up with another Graves (which many have already turned on the guy).
I don’t know, Sakic does have some skill at this. :sarcasm:

Wonder if this is similar to the Zadorov situation, where Sakic basically said if you sign your QO, we think we can find a team with a better opportunity for you?

If they move him though, they'll need to replace him in the bottom 6. Their depth isn't quite good enough without him, and it's still not clear to me whether Jost or JTC are better at 3C for the time being.

It would be great if he could find some scoring touch to start the season though. If he can get his production up, he can be a solid 3C. Needs to mesh well with his linemates though, and keep his feet moving at all times. He's only been able to do both in spurts, and they're key to his success.

I've just been assuming they'll go with a 21 man roster. They'll probably go with an extra D man, and then risk having to play with 11 forwards due to a late injury. They should have time to call up a forward in most cases though.

In return they can keep guys off the NHL cap, and bank some cap space for callups and a deadline deal.

Jost is worth more than this IMO. He's a legit NHL forward, despite the hate he gets. As TV said though this is a rough market and Sakic is going to use all his leverage every time to get the best deal for the team.
They send to roll 21/22 in a normal year. But I don’t see how they play this year without either expanding rosters or holding extra guys in the home market for callups who are already in the team cohort doing the same protocol as the NHL guys. There’s just no way they can do daily recalls like how they used to until everything is completely normal. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an Eagles group and a black aces group.

Love it. I really hope things start to click for him. I can’t help but cheer for the guy. I know I’m delusional, but I think he has the ability to be a contributing player on this team.

Well every team is going to be in the same situation with callups. And the Avs will still be better suited since Loveland is so close.

Have they announced how they'll handle callups? I would imagine both the AHL and NHL would have the same testing protocols, and if they've passed multiple COVID tests recently in the AHL, and then pass another one on the day of the callup, they could be given the green light.

In which case they can do this relatively close to normal.

This is basically sink or swim time for jost and I honestly hope he does well. Like he seems like a good guy off the ice. He also addresses a big hole in our roster. No more Tyson Tuesdays

Does anyone really think we're going to go with a 23 man roster? Colorado Eagles are only 30 minutes away so there really isn't much point in carrying 3 extra salaries. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they go down to a 21 man roster for homestands just to squeeze out some capsaving's from not having an extra ~$800k for a 22nd player on the roster.

I think they'll go with a 23 man roster cause of COVID.

I think he's treated quite unfairly/negative on this site, but in what way?
Like I said

He has over 200 GP, that usually brings a certain echelon or pay. Anders Bjork signed in July and got 1.6 x3 for 34 points in 108 GP over 3 years (.31 ppg) and Jost has 74 points in 208 GP (.34 ppg).

Taking a one year QO isn’t the end of the world, at least he can reassess after a year with arb rights and his deal is one way but the comps show he’s earned more. Maybe he’s doing the Avs a solid or understands he’s easily replaced.

I don’t mind having Jost around, he’s not a negative on the roster but I don’t see his role changing and it’s just gonna be status quo.

I think some of the calculation in negotiations might have been based off Puljujarvi's deal, who was taken 4th overall in the same draft as Jost. He got a two year deal with a $1.175M AAV, but he got $900k in the first year and $1.45M in the second.

Jost - 208 NHL games - 72 points - 0.35 pts/gm
Puljujarvi - 139 NHL games - 37 points - 0.27 pts/gm

So it's possible the Avs offered him a similar two year deal, but Jost preferred the one year QO which had a similar salary in year one as Puljujarvi, but Jost can bet on himself to have a decent season and get a better AAV on a multi year deal next off season.

Especially if taking the QO like Zadorov helps get him traded to a team that's a better fit for him either before or during the season, and they can give him a better opportunity for a bigger role.

He's a good depth player who is playing for a team where staying healthy is a huge issue. The less we have to rely on AHL call-ups the better. We have nothing to lose by holding onto him.

I can't believe I'm saying this but dammit you're right. We should keep Jost especially at this price....

Yup, this price is definitely worth it. Can’t think of much better depth options. Would rather have Jost than the ghost of the Thornton. Can’t believe I’m ok with keeping Jost ugh. With the new depth we have, having him does make sense. Use him as a defensive specialist.

I'm okay with keeping him around, he serves as a reminder to the FO that they shouldn't rush Newhook or any other high end prospect into the NHL.

Now that Jost is signed I hope Sakic goes out and gets another forward like Haula or Sheary at league minimum, just as he brought in Toews just hours after resigning Graves.

How the hell did we end up with no cap space?Last season we were in the best cap situation in the league. Lot going to have to have to come off the books next year to fit Landy and Makar

We are still in a good situation. But it can turn quickly.

I’d actually like to get a few league minimum players to use as our extra warm bodies. I’d rather our 3 scratches be league minimum players so that we can bank as much cap as possible before the deadline.

I’m actually kinda surprised we didn’t bring Connauton back to do exactly that. The guys really liked him.
