I really don't think he agreed to 3M with the intention of resigning there. 27 year old top 4 defenseman is worth a ton of money on the UFA market. Someone will offer him that juicy 5-6 years contract.

It's also possible he didn't think he was going to win his arbitration case and took the eleventh-hour offer the Isles gave him.
But now he is firmly in command unless he has an absolutely rotten year. The Isles will either have to pay up or deal him at the deadline. And if they're sellers at the deadline, hoo boy.
