Indeed. He was an exceptional player in exceptional physical shape. Way better than most players his age.

Kinda similar to Thornton and Williams, who are two others on 35+ contracts and playing well right now. Comparing every single situation to Iginla and Beauchemin is ridiculous.

Go further back with Bednar's history too...

AHL: "times shorthanded"

09/10 w/o: 15th
10/11 with: 1st
11/12 with: 24th

12/13 w/0: 29th

13/14 w/o: 16th
14/15 with: 3rd
15/16 with: 7th

16/17 w/0: 12th

NHL: "minors taken"

15/16 w/o: 22nd
16/17 with: T-10th
17/18 with: T-8th
18/19 with: 5th

it does seem that the teams go shorthanded more often when he's at the helm

People think Jost doesn't have good hockey sense? I don't know if that's the case, most people (including me) question whether it's at a high enough level to offset the very obvious other shortcomings in his game. I feel it has to be at an elite level in order to make up for his lack of size and speed and I just don't think it's quite there.

I still wonder if he'll ever be anything more than a marginal NHL player, but I'm hopeful he will prove me wrong.

Pavelski was the guy I thought Jost would most resemble. He still needs to learn how to get into the soft spots, and make better reads on plays.

He was doing a lot more of that when Landeskog and Calvert were on his line doing more of the dirty work. He's now back to mostly grinding it out along the boards and that resulting in nothing majority of the time.

There have definitely been a few who have called it into question. Not saying you did but alot of people sleep on his skill. He has great hands and Iq and his skating while not super fast is atleast nimble and he is strong on his skates. I think he'll be fine.

I’m not advocating getting Pavelski, but if there is a guy who I think won’t age badly it’s him. Dude skates like molasses for years, and gets by by being the best damn tip specialist in the NHL and has insanely high hockey IQ and work drive.

The Leafs signed Patrick Marleau to a three-year deal past age 35 and he was about as safe a bet as there was, he remained an elite skater well into his thirties, kept himself in top physical condition, and was incredibly durable over the course of his NHL career. They're regretting it now.

Yep. Reading the Leafs board about Marleau is only funny because it's not us who's stuck with the old man.

Yeah, but as you said his skating was his calling card. Lost a step and now he looks pedestrian. Again, I wouldn’t go after Pavelski because he does not fit how we play, but that is a guy I can see being good two-three years from now barring a significant injury.

If it’s not the Sharks, I could see him going to Boston.

A slow, older team with a bit of a window and he fits their playing style. Would probably fit like a glove.

If we don’t understand history, we are doomed to repeat it.

Iginla, Jarome
Beauchemin, Francois
Stuart, Brad

How quickly we forget - how currently productive 35 year old players can look so bad a short year or two later.

He's better than them and I said I'd do it if it was a two-year deal. He also wouldn't be one of the top targets going in but an option if they miss out.

I like Pavelski a lot, but why on earth would he come here of all places on a 2 year contract? Only way he's leaving the Sharks is if he doesn't think they are going to win it all in the next 3-5 years. What about our system shows a player of that caliber that the Avs will compete in that time frame?

If we gave him good money for 3-4 years, he might come over, but it would be an Iginla situation where he's here to get paid, not win.

It's like I'm living 2014 all over again. :help:

Signing players in their mid-30s is not the answer.

You know how many people last year were going HARD on how much the Avs should sign James Neal?

No one on here will ever learn when it comes to UFA. Every year people talk about all the mistakes are made during that time but no one ever learns from them the following one.

Yes but why can't we differentiate betweeb different players and the style of game they play? Certain playstyles last longer than others.

I mean that’s definitely true. But after like 33/34 the drop almost always comes out of nowhere and it comes hard.

I don’t think Pavelski will leave the Sharks. I wouldn’t want to sign him, anyway.
