Why do we "have to trade Barrie"???
Because we have to be careful with our cap space and because he pretty much sucks. His offensive pros(are there any really?) aren't enough to cover his terrible defensive cons. I believe this team will be so much better when Barrie's gone and Makar and Timmins are in. And that is without having to pay too much for a bad player.

Well that's a completely separate conversation. GM's need to utilize all methods. Draft, trade, and UFA. They can't rely on one or the other.

Who would you pass on him for though? Assuming they don't land the big fish in Karlsson?

Good solutions are building from within, see what the kids have. The reason why you pass is UFA contracts are always overpriced, inefficient, and often past most of the players primes.

You don't sign an EK for 11mx7, you draft a kid like Makar hoping he can fill that role for fractions of the price and use that savings to build a much better team.

The NHL is about who can make the most cost efficient rosters and have them stick long enough to go on multiple runs. You don't do that though UFA, see Min

Why do we "have to trade Barrie"???

He's too expensive on multiple levels and is completely replaceable. They dont HAVE to trade him but you would likely never find a better situation to trade a player than the one Barrie is in right now.

Its very likely that the Avs would be a better team with the return Barrie could get than Barrie himself in the long run using reasonable assessment of the risks involved.

Timmins is not Bigras. The only thing similar is they both had a bad concussion. Timmins had a better final year in junior and a much better WJC.

We have to wait and see how he looks in the next year or so obviously, but one of the main reasons Bigras didn't look good when he came back was because of his demeanor. He's a very gentle soul to begin with, and played too timid when he came back.

Timmins doesn't have this demeanor. He's willing to muck it up if necessary. That gritty mentality will hopefully help him get through the mental hurdles of returning from a concussion, and making plays under the pressure of heavy forechecks, but we'll have to see.
We'll see if he retains that mentality post-concussion. A lot of young players get gunshy after taking a serious head injury, Bigras included. I hope it isn't the case but it's certainly a concern and something to watch for when he gets back on the ice.

Barrie is 11th in defensemen scoring right now and 10th over the past two seasons... that is similar to replacing Rantanen who is 8th the past two seasons and 7th this year. You simply don't replace that level of production easily.
