I admit this game pissed me off more than it should have. My expectations were skewed after that hot start. Obviously, the try-hard, out-work your opponent strategy won't be sustainable every night across 82 games. I don't think that excuses them coming off days of rest, and putting forth what I thought was a half-ass effort. This was very much a winnable game. I'm ok with the WPG, and TB loss I suppose, but hard to stomach this one.

Oh well. Reset, and check myself. On to DET.

One thing I've noticed during the losing streak is the lack of screening the goalie. In fact, I've seen several times where one of our guys was coming down to take a shot in the slot while one of our guys is at the goal, but instead of sliding over to get in front of the goalie, the player slides out of the way (presumably to try and tip the shot) giving the goalie a great look at the shot....

...and leading to a string of expletives coming from my mouth.

As usual I suspect we’re jumping off the bridge too early. The win against the lowly Rangers, where we let a minor league team score 5 on us helped the group get a little too excited. Guys like Foegele can’t sprint for 82 games straight. I think we’re right where you would expect us to be, not as good as the start and not as bad as the losing streak.

We traded away a huge part of our skill. We had a playoff amount of skill, but lacked in gumption and sandpaper. Seems a little overcompensated for with the moves which was an obvious possibility before the season.

A little concerning was how little our top end talent could do against theirs. We’re about to pay Aho comparably. They get a lot for what they spend. Not blaming Aho but there’s a pretty sharp drop off after that. If we don’t get more talent it won’t be that different than estaal. We only have one defenseman as decent sized trade bait after this summer.

I don't think the major problem is the players. There could certainly be some improvements made to the roster, but the losses at this point are more due fixable problems.

No. It's lack of skill. That's why our PP is so bad. Our bottom six and top 6 is riddled with fringe NHL players. Wallmark, Zykov, McGinn, Svech, Foegele. Yeah..... there is the problem right there.

The team traded away the only 30 goal scorer it has for pennies. That was a joke of a trade and here we are wondering why goals are not being scored. Svech isn't the top line guy right now that we thought he would be.

This is the winner. All the worst coach, no talent, bottom 5 finish is funny. Don't remember it literally a week ago at this time. It was two okay games against good teams that they sadly blew a point late, and one bad game against a good team. There is a lot of fixable stuff. I just don't see the need to get too high or low this early.

What I meant is that I was under the impression he was going to be this game breaking forward. Hasn't been that dynamic presence yet. Not sure how he would be in top 6.

One can argue he us playing with Martinook and Wallmark though. I think we are really missing Rask right now tbh.

TBH I’m a little disappointed with his first few games. He’s on pace for 40 and that’s mostly on having a couple of points in the 8-goal game. We’ve been talking since rookie camp about how he seemed to be a little less impactful than it seemed like he should be, and that has carried through Traverse to the preseason to the regular season so far.

I still think he’s a stud and will be a cornerstone for the franchise, but in the here and now he’s not a guy who carries the play or who seems like a serious Calder contender. That changes the outlook for our season, since the general assumption was that he’d be a top-6 presence from the get go.

I agree about that but let's not forget we are 8 games into the season. Both of Martinook/Wallmark are useful NHLers i guess but that's not exactly offensive line. That disastrous PP also hurt a lot, especially for guys like Necas/Svech. Pretty much is about time to try Svech with Staal on second line.

They should do the same thing that is thought to be good for Necas...send him down to Charlotte and let him get 20 a night in all situations.

Usage has a lot to do with it. Svech is being asked to carry a line offensively and he’s clearly not up to doing that just yet. Which makes him the same as 98% of rookies and isn’t a source of concern, just a bit sobering compared to dreams of him coming in and completely changing our offensive dynamics.

8 games in, Ferland has been the biggest offensive addition of the offseason. Hockey is weird.

To me it was pick your poison with the top 3 forwards. Svech seemed the most likely to make an immediate impact but Zadina is the better sniper and Tkachuk has an all around game mixed with power that seemed to maybe have a lower ceiling but was the most likely to have a long successful career in my opinion. So far Tkachuk is the best skater and fits the best in with the NHL style, but he's playing with better linemates. Detroit already has too many young forwards so Zadina is learning how to play some defense in the minors. Svech's skating has been shown to be not explosive enough at the NHL level right now to be a consistent threat, and he doesn't know how to impact the game without the puck and space. His timing to the net and to the good areas is a hair late. Yet on occasion when he gets the puck in the right spot he's deceptive and slick laterally with obvious high end mitts. He makes some silly quick little flick passes no one is expecting that only guys like Aho or TT would even see coming. I still see him putting up maybe 15-20 goals and 40 pts which is right where I guessed over the summer so I'm not disappointed at all. I admit I was conflicted on the pick though, so it'll always be fun to watch the other two develop. If Montreal ends up being right it'll be a thorn in our side that we needed a high end center and there was one right there. No one would've taken him at 2 though, so it'll be a moot point.
