2013-14 NHL Hockey Stats and League Leaders - Time On Ice - National Hockey League - ESPN

This is kind of random, but I happened to check ice time leaders in the regular season, and weirdly found there was a peak around 2013-2015 (if I’m not mistaken, that’s about the time scoring went really low?) or so when the highest was 30 minutes.

it wasn’t just one or two player either, like some “generational” guy playing all game, there was a bunch of defensman approaching high 20’s-30:00 then, about regularly proportionally to each other the first like 30 defenseman stayed close to each other, but all their times went up together, then fell. Now there’s a couple guys (as of last season, idk this year) maxing about 26:30 and a bunch of guys closer to 22:00 than 26:00

I’m just curious, what gives? How does it start lower around the full lockout, rise pretty sharply around those 2-3 years, then dip again?
