They haven't announced the actual team yet, but the guys listed below played in a couple of exhibition games for Latvia against Poland (whom they beat 8-0 and 10-4). They only have one player in the CHL at the moment (Eddy Leintans-Rinke of the Sudbury Wolves), and word is he's probably not going to play due to citizenship issues (he's a dual Germany/Latvian citizen). Their main weakness is going to be in goal. Raimonds Ermics, who was their backup in Ottawa will be the starting goalie (he's playing for the Boston Bulldogs of the Atlantic Junior League).

Most of the guys play either abroad in junior leagues or for the two Latvian teams in the Belorussian elite men's league. Rob Bukarts, who has seen time in the KHL this season, is by far their best player and should be providing most of their offence (still don't know how he didn't get drafted last year. Clearly stronger than many guys taken as early as the late second round, Jared Staal for instance). Lipsbergs, if I remember correctly, did alright at last years championship, and Indrasis was one of the top scorers in the Bel. League. A friend of mine who just saw some of them play with Dinamo/Juniors says that any OHL team could easily take em on, and they'll probably be lucky to lose 10-0 agianst Canada on boxing day. Guess they're in the same boat as last year: They can't compete with the big boys, but they route the Kazakhstans and Germanys of the world 7-1. Even their head coach has admitted that many of the returning players haven't improved at all since last year (although he attributes this mostly to the lack of quality coaches in Latvia).

Uh, no, he isn't.
Correct: http://whl.ca/57-whl-players-called-for-international-duty-p139398.

As for the rosters, thanks everyone!

Once again, the Swiss definitely look like dark horses for the tournament: rather strong D, some quality forwards, and a team system known to pull an upset or two.

Latvia and Austria are definitely in trouble. Bukarts is the only real known threat for the Latvians, and as mentioned the goaltending will be a huge problem. The Austrian team has some notable names (Ulmer, Weiser and Puschnik stand out to me) but that won't be enough.

Asutria was more succesful in their 2nd game against the Russian U18 team beating them 7:5, but that was not really an A Russian selection and the Russians played 3 games in 3 days as they travelled to Slovakia yesterday and played the Slovak U18 team.

If they were the best of the worst they would be in it, no? As for Germany, they played well under their potential last year. We'll see if they can get it together and win in Div. 1

In other news, to update my Latvian roster from above, it looks like Dainis Vasiljevs will be the other goaltender:

However that is the problem with the relegation/promotion system in the WJC´s, the team that gets relegated/promoted or manages not to get relegated is usually very different from the one that plays next year and that´s why they either struggle in the WJC (look at Kazakhstan last year) or a birth year that is better than the previous one has to play at a lower level.;)

Yeah, I know. Personally I want to see it become a 12 team tournament so more teams get to stay up top, but that's not going to happen while most of the Championships are in Canada (Hockey Canada opposes the idea). Denmark, Belarus, Switzerland and Latvia have all been disadvantaged by the current tournament set-up.

It´s a very complicates issue, we´ve got to ask ourselves whether 15-0 losses to Canada and such will actually give the players on either side something. And the answer to that question is far from easy. Plus it would require the tournament to be a bit longer and I can´t see most teams appreciating losing their players for even longer than they have to now.

I wish Belarus was in this year, they would have definitely been the best of the worst.

Two days later the well known hockey power Italy defeats your "definitely best of the worst" team of Belarus.

Am I right if I guess that you haven't seen many (or any at all) games in U20 Div.1 tournaments?

I would not use the potentially most lopsided game to define the format of the championship. If most of the games are close to some extent there is no need for big changes.
