It almost sounds like staging the tournament was about international prestige more than anything else. Reading this I can't help but think the Canadian Open won't be a thing this year.

Running the Australian Open this year resulted in a loss of over $78M ($100M Australian dollars). Lower attendance plus increased expenses of quarantining players.

I'm surprised they didn't try to reduce prize money to help offset the costs.

The prize money was actually reduced from last year. About 33%. You can't drop it much more, or else it's basically an Australian nationals invitational, which means very few people watch. There goes the TV revenue.

The organization pays Tiley well enough that he has two residences. Not feeling sorry for them.
