Auston Matthews, 60 goal seasons?

Safe to say that Auston Matthews will be putting up some 60 goal seasons at some point in his career? He would have had 66 this year if it was a full 82 game season. 60 goals seasons is pretty rare nowadays but it's elite company - Bure, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Selanne, Jagr, Lemieux, Gretzky, Espisitos, etc.

He has the talent, not sure he stays healthy enough. I'd bet he gets 1 or 2 in his career.

He definitely has the talent for it.

It takes a lot to go right to happen though. Ovechkin only managed it once. Ditto for Stamkos.

As much as I hate the Leafs, and subsequently Matthews, it would be great to see another 60 goal season.

It's hard as hell. He's got the talent to get there, but it takes a combo of a great season, good health, and a bit of puck luck on top. It's tough to get all 3 at the same time. I think he'll do it, but it won't be a recurring thing.

Maybe. Tough to say. Ovi is so rare not only in talent but also health. Everything would have to line up pretty well perfect for that to happen. Of anyone in the league can do it though, it's Matthews

Possible that he could have one in him. He's JUST starting to peak now, and should be peaking for the next 3-4 years. Who knows? He'll have to start playing some 82 game season tho.

Nothing is out of the question, the sky is the limit for Matthews and his scoring ability.

If he’s able to remain healthy, there’s more data out there supporting that he will as opposed to he won’t.

That being said it’s a difficult feat that I wouldn’t pencil in for anyone, even one of Matthews stature.

It benefitted him the second time. This will be his peak
Per game sure, but definitely not raw totals... which seems to be what Matthew’s detractors point to first and foremost. Heck, the guy has 199 goals in 333 games. That equates for 49 goals per 82 games for his career. He is age 23 and at the start of his prime and if he gets a full season’s worth of games he is pretty much a lock for 50 goals and quite possible he cracks 60 in a career year.

No one has hit 60 since Stamkos in 11-12, only other player to hit 60 in the last 20 years is Ovie. In fact, only Ovie has exceeded the half-century mark since the 2012 lockout. So I wouldn't say hitting 60 is "safe to say" for any player.

I don't at all see this as a knock on Matthews at all, to put it in perspective if this were a regular season even after the blistering 41 in 56 he just put up matthews would still need 19 in final 26 games to hit 60. It's really hard to do.

Pretty easy no imo

In the past 9 years only Draisaitl and Ovechkin have eclipsed the 50 goal mark. 50 goals is extremely hard to hit (Matthews himself hasn't done it), so the probability of hitting 60 is way lower.

I think Matthews should get his first 50 goal season next year though, assuming he can be healthy (which is far from a guarantee)

Draisaitl scored 50 but I agree with the rest of your post. Its a very tall order

Peaked? Peaked Holymakinaw, let me tell you something, Matthews hasn't even begun to peak, and when he does peak you’ll know because he's gonna peak so hard that everybody in Philadelphia is gonna feel it.

He can probably do it. My guess is it all depends on how Tavares ages. As he declines Matthews will be relied upon more and will get harder defensive assignments against him for more mins/game.
