I remember their top line of Lysiak, Plett and Vail - big bodies with some skill.

For the first couple of seasons the Flames were coached by Bernie "Boom-Boom" Geoffrion (former Hab and HOF'er) and he was a major celebrity until his ulcers did him in.

Two memories I have of the Atlanta Flames against the Flyers:

  1. A 1974 4-0 playoff sweep by Philly with the last game of the series, played in the Omni, ending on an overtime goal by Dave Schultz. In that game, the Flames led 3-0 then Schultz absolutely destroyed Bryan Hextall in a fight with about 3 minutes left in the second period. About 10 seconds later, the Flyers scored, they got two third period goals to knot the game and then Schultz netted the game-winner in OT.
  2. Before the Flyers went on their NHL record-setting 35 game unbeaten streak, the Atlanta Flames romped 9-2 in the Omni in a game that Philadelphia's Phil Myre let in all nine goals. The next night, the Flyers' third game of the season, the streak began.

I saw them play the Blues at the Omni back when I was a kid on our way home from a vacation.

The "Downtown Connectors" ... when the Flames won the Cup in 1989, the Calgary Herald ran a story about these three, as well as other former Atlanta Flames (Ecclestone, Clement, Bouchard, Manery, etc) who lamented the loss of hockey in Atlanta. They all ended up moving back there after their playing days were over.

Does ANYONE have pictures of the Flames in the Omni (or any good shots OF the Omni that they would be willing to scan and send me?

I am in the planning stages of building a model of the Omni (for a train layout).

I have several Atlanta Flames remembered at http://www.greatesthockeylegends.com including Pat Quinn, Eric Vail, Tom Lysiak, Curt Bennett, Guy Chouinard, Willi Plett and Phil Myre.

Here's a more direct link: http://www.greatesthockeylegends.com/2006/05/other-notable-teams.html

I'd love to add more, so if you have any biographical materials of interest let me know.

I saw lots of games at the Omni - would drive/fly down from NC to see my Bruins play - also saw many other teams there too. Would usually see about ten games a year there.

Broke my heart when they imploded the Omni - haven't been to the new place yet.
