Sid Abel is the only new three-time champ. He has now captained 2 ATD champions.

Vladimir Krutov, Guy Lafleur, Bobby Bauer, Tony Leswick, Allan Stanley, and Earl Seibert all win their second ATD title.

This is the 2nd consecutive ATD title for Guy Lafleur.

Each of Sid Abel and Tony Leswick had won a title with the NJ Swamp Devils previously.

Allan Stanley and Earl Seibert have now won 2 ATD titles as partners, previously doing so as the top pairing in the 28 team ATD 7. (I had no conscious memory that they had won together when I drafted them this year).

It doesn't appear that the multi-winners from Hawkey Town's team were ever added to the OP. I'm going to edit the above post with that info now.

Edit: Done.

HT18's team added:

Rod Seiling as a rare 4-time winner, joining only Grant Fuhr and Babe Siebert

Ryan Kesler, Herb Gardiner, Jim Neilson, and Rogie Vachon as 3-time winners (Vachon was a backup for all 3 of his wins)

Patrik Elias, Milt Schmidt, Neil Coville, Pat Lafontaine, Red Kelly, and Red Dutton as 2-time winners. Colville was used at 2 for one of his titles, and at C for his more recent one.

It's not surprising that a winner in a smaller draft had more players who had won the ATD title previously.

It is remarkable that Guy Lafleur won back-to-back ATD titles, as he was often on unsuccessful teams and for a long time his stock was falling (not sure his draft rankings were dropping but intuitively his ATD reputation was in limbo, until seventieslord jumpstarted it with a great bio).

He looks to be the 2nd top forward to win back-to-back championships, after Newsy Lalonde.

IIRC, Lafleur won the back-to-back Conn Smythes as well, which may be a first in ATD history. Harvey and Lalonde might have done it.

*Note: commentary below was written after ATD#11.*

And there are your champions. It is an interesting mix; it's hard to compare the 20 team and 32 team champions to the 28 teamers, but looking at the winners all together gives a flavor for where the ATD has been going at least since the inception of the playoff system. They are a fairly heterogenous group, and when you look at the evolution of the champions no particular philosophy of team-building emerges as the dominant form. There are, however, a few common threads that emerge:

- all of the champions have at least one top-15 defenseman on the roster. The weakest #1s we see among the former champions are Earl Seibert and Pierre Pilote, and every single champion has drafted a defenseman before the end of the 2nd round. Perhaps in the future we will see a team win the ATD without a top defenseman and break the mold the way pappy's Bisons did with Rayner in goal in ATD#9, but for now strength at the top end of the blueline seems to be the most common thread among the champions.

- all of the champions have 3rd lines that can score. None of the victors have pure checking 3rd lines, and the ATD#11 Bruins' 3rd line clearly favors offense over defense. Again, we could see a team break through with a pure checking 3rd line in future drafts, but it hasn't happened yet.

- the coaching is outstanding. Cecil Hart is probably the weakest of the championship coaches, and the rest are really top-notch.

- the parts on the scoringlines fit together. Every scoringline on every champion has at least one legit playmaker, goalscorer and physical presence. None of the championship scoring units are open to easy criticism based on an inability to compete in one or another area of the ice or aspect of the game.

- goaltending is surprisingly average. For all the talk we throw around about goal being the most important position on the ice, only one champion has featured a top-7 goaltender (the Clippers with Hall), and that team likely could have won with a much weaker goalie, such was the strength of the Nanaimo franchise at that time. We have yet to see a top goalie carry his team to a Milt Dunnell Cup.

Allright, I corrected the formatting errors and misspellings, and copy-pasted TDMM's update. Just need a Mod to copy-paste my post in the OP.

I'm not going to note it, because such things weren't noted in the original format, which I will respect out of some irrational traditionalism.

Also, I forgot the coaches for ATD2020, fixed now. Let me know if you see anything wrong.

By God I was wrong, it was noted. Fixing it now. (I was wondering what you meant by consistency)

Edit: Fixed and noted.

Added the OPPF link at the top of the post. The MLD link should be restored and I presume the MLD championship thread should be updated.

Edit: MLD championship retrospective link restored.

3 men have captained multiple ATD champions:

Bill Cook (Boston Bruins, NJ Swamp Devils)
Boris Mikhailov (Montreal Canadiens, New York Americans)
Sid Abel (NJ Swamp Devils x 2)

I wouldn't have expected that many repeat captains.

Abel is the only one to captain the same franchise to the championship twice.

Note that captaincy was not indicated prior to ATD 9

Out of curiosity, I looked at the top 50 players per the most recent HOH project, and looked at how many ATD's the players won:
  • Three times (2) - Howe, Harvey
  • Twice (7) - Kelly, Lafleur, Mikita, Cook, Lalonde, Boucher, Park
  • Once (14) - Gretzky, Bourque, Lidstrom, Potvin, Nighbor, Messier, Hall, Trottier, Sakic, Taylor, Sawchuk, Chelios, Clancy, Tretiak
  • Never (27) - Orr, Lemieux, Hull, Beliveau, Roy, M. Richard, Morenz, Crosby, Hasek, Shore, Jagr, Plante, Ovechkin, Fetisov, Makarov, Esposito, Clarke, Brodeur, Bossy, Robinson, Lindsay, Yzerman, Kharlamov, Apps, Dryden, Coffey, H. Richard
Of the 27 players who never won, 5 of them are goalies (Roy, Hasek, Plante, Brodeur, Dryden). Most ATD champions have won the draft with relatively average goaltending (the winning goalies have been Bower, Hall, Broda, Rayner, Fuhr 2x, Sawchuk, Gardiner, Esposito, Thompson, Vezina, Fuhr a third time, Bower a second time, Fuhr a fourth time, Brimsek, Parent, Tretiak, and Hainsworth).

Any commonalities around the 22 skaters who never won? Several of them are goal-scoring wingers (Hull, M. Richard, Ovechkin, Bossy); and if you're looking at offense-only wingers, you can also add Jagr and Kharlamov. There's a long-standing perception that offense-only wingers are tougher to build around, and I think that's borne out by the ATD results. Esposito and Coffey both have very clear strengths and weaknesses, so a number of the players with no ATD championships can be categorized as "tough to build around". I'm not saying you can't build an ATD team around them, just that it hasn't been done entirely successfully yet. (On the other hand, Lafleur is an offense-only winger with two ATD championships - he has an amazing playoff resume which helps, but so do Richard and Bossy).

Also note that Crosby and Ovechkin were just starting their careers during ATD #6, so they haven't been top 50 players during the entire period.

In most of the other cases, the players are clearly good enough (and balanced/versatile enough) to have a championship team built around them. The fact that they don't have any ATD championships is probably due to chance more than anything.

I found Lafleur easier to build around than other offensive players, as in real life, he was used as the lone freewheeler on an otherwise balanced or defensive team.

Basically, I think you can build any type of team around Lafleur.

Whereas someone like Esposito or Jagr really needs a more specific team build.

Maurice Richard isn't super hard to build around, but he still needs specific parts around him.

___

A lot of that has to be random though. I had a team with both Coffey and Esposito that won its division, and overpass had a Jagr team go to the ATD finals. So a lot of those "hard to build around" guys have come close.

I scanned the Final threads and picked who I thought were the two best players from the finalist. They were some close-calls, I went with the flow.

Results

Shore/Sakic/H.Richard/Brodeur
Jagr/Trottier/Gardiner
Orr/Conacher/Benedict + (Nighbor drafted at 150th)
Kelly/Brimsek
Hasek/Trottier
Fetisov/Makarov/Chelios
Jagr/Chelios
Roy/Schmidt
Jagr/Pronger
Jagr/Cleghorn
Béliveau/Leetch/Bathgate
Lemieux/Conacher/Gardiner
Lidstrom/Moore + (2015 Crosby)
Jagr/Clancy
Apps/Makarov/Chelios
Gretzky/Roy
Richard/Hasek/Lalonde/Seibert
Béliveau/Vézina

—Jaromir Jagr was a 5 time ATD finalist and never won !

—Chris Chelios was a 4 time ATD finalist and won once.

—Among goalies, Hasek and Roy made the Final twice.

—Based on HO's list, here are the Top 50 players that never reached an ATD Final:
  • Never (10) - Hull, Morenz, Esposito, Clarke, Bossy, Robinson, Lindsay, Yzerman, Kharlamov, Coffey

The list should be good now, did two rounds of scanning. If you see a mistake, let me know.

The nice thing with Lafleur is you can easily save value on his center. As long as he has that Lemaire vibe, you're good. Abel and Schmidt qualified, but so would a myriad of centers drafted between 80th and 150th.

Richard is easy, and his draft placement often gives you the Lach option later on. He has more intangibles than Lafleur and Jagr ; a bit more grit to his game.

Jagr looks harder, but he made the Final 5 times, so maybe he isn't ! At this point we can start talking about a "Jagr curse".

Thanks for looking at that. That looks consistent with my observation - most of the Top 50 players without any ATD final appears are:
  • Goalies (Plante, Dryden)
  • Offense-only wingers (Hull, Ovechkin, Bossy, Kharlamov)
  • Players with very clear strengths and weaknesses (Coffey, Esposito)
That leaves us with Morenz, Clarke, Robinson, Lindsay, and Yzerman. It's pretty easy to see an ATD team built around any of them. I'd guess that, in those cases, it's due to luck more than anything.

Considering how valuable #1 Dmen are, Robinson is the most surprising one to me, but I agree with you, it should be fairly easy to build a contending team around any of these guys.

EDIT: Morenz definitely was unfairly treated for some time by GMs (and seems to still be by a few), who think he's goal scoring biased instead of balanced offensively, so he is not that surprising.
