20 games in. 1st place in the Metro.

The good:

Bob appears to be back
Team is playing better D
Injuries have been minimal
Korpi hasn't lost in regulation despite some poor stats
Murray playing well
PP showing signs of life

The bad:

Bjorkstrand not having a great year
Panarin's shooting % below his career average (which could be good as he regresses to the mean)

The unknown:

Will it continue or is this just one of the Jackets streaks which ultimately go the other way?
If it continues will it have a positive effect on Bread & Bob?

Stay tuned.

Thoughts?

I would add strong scoring depth to the positives.

The Good:

Teams offensive output has exceeded expectations.
*knock on wood* Avoided injuries.
Relatively disciplined. (24th in Penalties per game)
Re-emergence of Murray as a top flight defenseman.
Re-emergence of Dubinsky as a useful bottom 6 player.
Emergence of certain role players such as Duclair and Hannikainen.
Continued growth of Nutivaara, Anderson, and PLD.
Boone Jenner.

The Bad:

Poor special teams (23rd in PP, 21st in PK), although it has improved lately.
Inconsistent team effort defensively.
Zach Werenski's confidence has faded and his defensive game is falling apart.
Inability to spark Wennberg and Bjorkstrand.
Riley Nash

The Unknown:

The ongoing Artemi Panarin/Sergei Bobrovsky situations and the impact on a long season.
Battle tested: not too many tough teams at the start of the year.
Goaltending: Korpisalo has looked OK, stats don't say it though. Bobrovsky has re-emerged from his early struggles. But will it last?

The Good:
So far, there's been no sophomore slump for PLD
Cam is playing his best hockey right now. Keep that up and we'll be OK
Duby looks quicker and has been more dangerous this year
Ryan Murray has stayed healthy and is performing at a high level.
PP, while not where we want it to be, has looked functional most of the year

The Bad:
Still give up too many dangerous shots in the kill zone
WTF Oliver, you're on pace for 16 points this year
I'm just going to have to accept Wennberg isn't going to be an all around threat on offense, although he is on pace for 48 points, which is near his average
Jury is still out on Nash. I'll give him to the new year to gel with the team
Abramov in Cleveland is struggling to adjust to higher competition. After 16 games, he has 2 goals and 6 points and is playing on the 3rd line.

The team looks great but I want to wait until after the Leafs games before judging the team as a whole. Competition hasn't been strong so far.

The team is about where I thought they'd be, but the performance has been bumpy. I do enjoy assessing the players individually.

Compared to my own personal expectations:

Strongly exceeded expectations:
Duclair, Foligno, Dubinsky, Murray

Slightly exceeded expectations:
Atkinson, Hannikainen, Anderson, Jenner, Harrington

At expectation:
Panarin, Dubois, Jones, Savard, Sedlak, Nutivaara, Bobrovsky

Slight disappointments:
Wennberg, Kukan, Korpisalo

Big disappointments:
Bjorkstrand, Werenski, Nash

----------------------

Actually in terms of surprises, the big thing to me is the big boy playstyle. They're playing some bruising hockey and winning with it. The softer players like Bjorkstrand and Nash (and Milano) are not contributing. The heavy core: Anderson, Jenner, Foligno, and Dubinsky - note that they are all Howson acquisitions - are driving the team.

Can't argue with the results-especially given Bob's horrific start to the season. Soft competition may be distorting results somewhat.
