History will show the Senators saved a ton of money by committing early and long-term to their two young stars from the 2020 NHL Draft.

When Ottawa Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion signed Tim Stutzle to an eight-year extension last summer with a year remaining on his entry-level contract, it seemed like a good piece of proactive business.

Unlike Alexis Lafreniere, who was drafted first overall at the 2020 NHL Draft or Quinton Byfield, who went number two, it was clear to everyone that, at number three, the Senators had landed a first-line player with a ton of upside.

Ridiculous draft. One of the greatest ever for us.
Stutzle and Sanderson is 2 superstars and likely to be our 2 best, but add in Greig, Jarventie and Kleven all looking like quality players. Sokolov and Meriklainen could make it too, at least for a cup of coffee. 3 other late round lottery tickets. Pretty damn good.

Might as well fire the guy most people give credit to drafting the Sens rebuild

We already fired Trent Mann.

But most uninformed observers give credit or blame to GMs for draft picks, when they typically defer to the scouting staff and rarely overrule them.

Most uninformed people make statements about PDs involvement in player selection. Coming from a scouting background PD goes through all the suggestions and travels frequently with scouts to see players in action. Like any hierarchy run business, ultimately, it is PD who makes the decision on the picks. The info from the scouting team selected by Pierre is definitely important, but PD is still making the calls.

The Stutzle deal already looks like a bargain for the Sens but it's way too premature to declare the Sanderson deal will be a win. It may well be a steal but it's also possible that Sanderson doesn't progress the way most here think he will. On balance I'm a supporter of the deal but there's still some risk to it.

If we're going to blame Dorion for drafting Tyler Boucher, we should also praise him with drafting Sanderson (Stutzle was a no-brainer).
If we are going to praise Mann for drafting Stutzle and Sanderson and Greig and Kleven and Batherson and Formenton and Tkachuk and Sogaard and Pinto we have to blame him for Boucher as well but Boucher was definitely drafting a type over what the others seem.

To think this was the draft where I had mentally checked out because LA took Byfield and just didn't give af who we got at #5 because Raymond was taken.

Best crow I've ever eaten as a Sens fan

Don't see it that way. Mann is not working. If he was a genius like PD he would be scooped up. No?

He can't work somewhere else yet. He was fired before his contract was up, so he's actually still getting paid by the Senators.

Once that stops, he'll be able to find another job.

Similar to what Babcock did. He became Columbus' coach the day after his last cheque from the Leafs came through.

He's collecting a pay cheque to sit on the patio at the cottage having some drinks and spending time with the fam, seems like he's got things pretty figured out to me...
